I read during the GFC that Jane Brody of the NYT recommended people buy and consume canned vegetables as an austerity measure. Where I am one can of mixed vegetables costs about $3. This week I can buy 1kg of fresh broccoli. Today I bought 1kg of frozen mixed vegetable for $2. The only reason anyone buys canned vegetables is when they are going bush. Neither cheap nor palatable. Maybe things are different in America.

  2. Many can't get to markets for daily fresh foods, I have helpers that do this for me and I often now with some knee issues more canned beans and tomato sauce and some other things...we were raised on a lot of canned peas and corn when I grew up in the U.S. A can of nice organic beans is $2 or less if on sale.

I steam veggies in the microwave, but my experience has been that you can find store brand cans of soup (don't know if vegetables are the same) around .89 on sale sometimes. The brand name stuff is ridiculous though/easily over a dollar more expensive.

But how does the cost of canned vegetables compare with frozen veg? \
