You might deserve respect but I dont respect your political opinion when you wont even bother to walk out the door for an hour to put your money where your mouth is.
At the very very least you can make a 'protest vote' and at best you can vote for the 'closest' possible ideology to your own.
    Communist Party perhaps.
Heck .. if you just SPOILED a ballot (write that speech on it) then you at least did something.
Somehow a little bit of something is influenced, recorded and put into play.

    Instead.. you do nothing.

    Thats a shame.
Last time around almost 40% of Canadians did nothing and you know what.. we got exactly what we deserved.
You might need to get used to getting the same 'nothing' since YOU are giving nothing.

    See how that works.

You do realize that the political spectrum extends far beyond democratism, right?

Democratism is the closest proponent of Leftism to the center of that spectrum. Thats why people love it.

I lay on the far right. For me to vote is absurd. For you to suggest I do shows you don't understand.

I would definitely vote NDP, but can't vote til next year :( But yeah, so far I've liked what I've seen and heard from Jack, and everyone else just pisses me off (except the Green Party). I agree with nearly all their goals and issues that need to be addressed.

You dont understand that the one little 'catch' with democracy is that it avails itself to your goals as well as others.
In other words - you can vote for a Fascist Party, Theocracy, Monarchy or whatever reform to end Democracy you like.

But really.. you dont even believe enough in your own ideology to make an effort for it.
You could cancel out one 'pro-democracy' vote with your own but nahhhh.

Curious though - what is your ideal political situation for Canada?

I think Talk Show Host is getting at the failed pluralistic systems that co-exist within the bureaucracy of the Canadian government, and believes that no single explanatory system or view of reality (namely Democracy) is able to account for all the phenomena of societal life.

You are talking about pluralism in Canada, are you not??

Guess what - I dont think Democracy is going to solve all our problems either.
Maybe not even many of them.

The point is that I have one chance to go and .. at the very very least.. 'vote down' the worst possible ideas.
If that was all people would do on Monday Jan 23 then at least SOMETHING is happening, moving, getting put out there.

Sitting at home boycotting is really worse than nothing.
In fact, the Beaurocrats and Elitists and those who intend to use and abuse Democracy for their purposes will say THANK YOU to TSH and everyone else who ..lol.. 'protests' by NOT voting.
    They love it!

Like I say - even voting for the Communist Party gets something put out there.
Heck.. start a 'Anti Democracy Party' and then go vote for it!
    Do something.. do anything.

If you are rich, white, male and straight and do not believe in public institutions then conservatives are your best choice otherwise that would be a bad vote.

I anti rich but pretty well but I cannot vote conservative because I believe in the greater good and progress.

I would have liked to vote NDP but it seems like my vote would be going to the liberals just so conservatives have a lesser chance of winning. But it seems like the conservatives will win because the left vote is split between the Green, NDP and the liberals.

The liberals are a lesser evil.

WTF? Dude, the Conservatives represent a whole gamut of people, and the core of that party is a GRASSROOTS organisation of middle class folks who wanted the government smaller and their tax bill smaller.

They also have more visible minorities and women in their caucus, and they toss out people who are Nazis or otherwise idiots. I wish the Liberals could say the same, but they can't.

What the hell does this mean?

No, the Cons will win cause Canadians are sick of being fleeced by the Liberals and don't want to give the reins to an even bigger freespending pack of weirdos.

    To what?

I strongly disagree. The Conservative Party is not representative of women. If the Conservative Party is a grassroots organisation, one would assume that their numbers of female candidates would reflect the basic value and importance of gender-equality and participation within parliamentary positions.

Please Note the following table, to which the data has been collected by a group of female political scientists, professors, and students at the University of Athabasca:

    http://stillcounting.athabascau.ca/table3-2.php

At the Federal level, the Conservatives were the only party to have less than 15% of their running candidates to be female, while they continue to be the governing party in 5 provinces.

This table counted only female running candidates, and if you browse the site, you can find more information on how many females are actually elected into office, hold positions of power, and examine which parties they are from.

Now, as for IronGoth claiming that Conservatives have more minorities and women in their Caucus, or as Cabinet Ministers... I'll be honest: your claim is outlandishly false and irritatingly presumptuous to make in the first place.

    Please examine carefully the following:
    http://stillcounting.athabascau.ca/table6-1.php

You can choose to argue that this data isn't as up-to-date as it could be, but this site is an actual publication by academics, who have to have their reports and projects viewed and evaluated by peers before they have the right to publish their information. Please, feel free to look at other sources of credible data if you seek more up-to-date information. I'd love to see some of your statements backed with just a smidgen of integrity and adherence to the actual truth.

    Actually, let me help you:

    Wiki_Link

% of female candidates in 2006 Canadian Federal Election by Party:

    Liberals (79/308) ~ 25.64%
    Conservatives (38/308) ~ 12.33%
    NDP (108/308) ~ 35.06%
    Bloc (23/75) ~ 30.66%
    Green (72/308) ~ 23.37%

... you people are intelligent enough to click on the link and examine the table yourselves.

NB: take a brief look at the two candidates at the bottom of this table that both had some trouble with the law, and observe each Party Leader's formal decision.

My father approached me with a typed letter he received in the mail from The Knights of Columbus, to which he is a member. It clearly reminded him that when voting, it is important and a duty as a Roman Catholic to take your values and beliefs into account. It stressed the importance of being aware that Catholic values should be a priority.

I know my old man was offended by the letter, otherwise he wouldn't have asked me to read it and ask my opinion.

Voting for yourself and for your own personal beliefs is commendable, but it falls short of deserving legitimate authority to govern from a legal standpoint of view in Canada.

In my opinion, Harper came out day one with his take on gay-marriage on purpose, and was coached to do so. I viewed this as a tacitly cross-bordering position to take, and strinkingly American in the manner to which Mr. Harper would prefer to pass human right laws. What confused me, was that Mr. Harper said that if a free-vote was held, and the gay-marriage law was overturned, that he would honour the gay-marriages since and that the new statute wouldn't be retro-active.

To me, this was an indication that he supported gay-marriages, but had strong doubts that the majority of MPs in parliament would support the issue if there was ever to be a vote.

Quite troubling to think that he pulled out a religious promise to ratify the law. From then on, it was talk about helping families by cutting the GST, a promise to abandon the Liberal's current universal childcare program, and no talk whatsoever about strengthening the public health system, in fact, I don't recall Harper EVER even touching on health care publicly... I do remember him saying at the first French publicly broadcasted debate that he "didn't care who provided health care services" and that it "didn't matter where the funding came from". His attitude was clear: the government should have minimal managing commitments and regulatory control over the matter.

Stephen Harper commits to positions, like Britney Spears commits to marriage.

    SO WHAT

You could argue that the Fiberals only have 25% women, therefore they hate women too. There, I can play this game too.

Was that an attempt to make it seem like visible minorities are running conservative candidates, or were you making a point that conservative leaders target minorities to gain votes?
