And if you think about it...any country with an actual government in place (and I don't say this to be mean...I say this because there are many countries with "loose governments" so-to-speak), immigration shouldn't be easy. Especially in America because there are SOO many people who want to move here for work, education, etc. My uncle in Italy being one of them. He'd give his right arm to be working in the stock market here...he has the education and experience. We'd overfill in no time!

You might find cultural assimilation harder then you think Cate.

Well, yeah... millions of other reasons.

I also consider myself a citizen of the world. That's why the closed-minded nature of this thread truly bothers me.

i agree with most, except the trade jobs - around Boston, they're unionized. real hard to get a job in the trade you've been working in once your out of it.

    Very easy answer:

Legalize all the current illegals and then establish a much more logical immigration program, and a migrant worker program.

    Yet again, simple.

Why choose words wisely!? Trust me, sweety...it's not you. It's me (literally...not the metaphor "it's not you, it's me" haha)

I'm racist, closed minded, give Americans a bad name, etc.

I was actually going to mention unions and how they could protect legal worker's rights, but I had no idea if there was a carpenter's union in Mass. (I guess there is one.)

So that should only be another defense mechanism that this system has against "illegals" taking over jobs.

Same thing here, fitz. Which is why my friend is having a hard time finding a job doing finishing work in carpentry right now.

And he is sueing his employer. He has a feeling he's going to drop more money on it then he's going to receive. Theres no documentation of this illegal working for him...because...well...it's hard to say this...the guy was illegally working...so it was kind of a secret...due to the illegal aspect of it.

    it should be...

but when it comes to paying lower wages...its quite an easy business decision
shit, i'd hire an illegal over someone i'd have to pay top dollar to

Well yeah, it's not easy. No big change is. Yet this change is actually possible within the limitations of this current political system.

Its clear everyone has a strong opinion on this topic, which is great. Honestly, who would want a bunch of people who dont care?? Communication is difficult because we all think we know the right way, but this thread is good. Im learning alot. None of us are 'wrong'.

Good for your friend. He should sue. If he doesn't win, then he should have fought harder for his rights and produced evidence of the Mexican working for his past employer, or called immigration control... they would have fined the shit out of the guy.

As far as I'm concerned, every person that enters the USA illegally from a third world country should be considered a refugee. Shame on all of you who are standing in the way of progress.

it is quite possible...and in time it should happen. we'd be much better off. but the gov't is in a perpetual state of war against terror, and really this is a backburner issue that will not be taking seriously in the senate or congress

I wouldn't be having this discussion if I didn't research this topic extensively and if I didn't think that I was 100% right, without a single tiny doubt.

True, but luckily immigration is becoming more and more of an issue, and it will eventually have to be addressed on "How do we let them in?" terms instead of "Do we let them in?" terms.
