LOS ANGELES -- A police officer was recovering in a hospital Friday after he was accidentally shot in the stomach by another officer at the Long Beach Police Academy pistol range, authorities said. It happened at the Edward Davenport Shooting Range on Carson Boulevard near the 605 Freeway in Long Beach.

The wounded officer was identified as Joel Cameron, 40, according to the Press-Telegram. He was transported to Long Beach Memorial Hospital.

A 13-year veteran assigned to a gang unit, Cameron was shot at 3:35 p.m. on Thursday according to Long Beach police Sgt. David Cannan. Officers had just completed SWAT team training exercises when the handgun one of the officers was carrying went off, he said. Officers "were heading to clean and put away the guns when a handgun accidentally discharged and hit another officer," Cannan said. Cameron was hit in the stomach and taken to a hospital, where he was in "good condition," Cannan said.

An investigation was under way to determine if any safety procedures were violated. The shooter "will have to explain what occurred and we'll be mindful of his needs as well," Cannan told the Press-Telegram. "It was an accident at best, but our concern is that it occurred in the first place."

HUNTINGTON -- One of two suspects has been arrested in this week's shooting of a 2-year-old child and a 25-year-old man.

Deandre Lamar Harris, 20, of Huntington was arrested at 12:51 a.m. Friday, according to a press release issued by Sgt. Mike Kuzila of the Southfield Police Department near Detroit.

Harris and an unidentified juvenile are both wanted in connection with the shootings of Shavante Tibbs, 2, and Donald Elliott, 25. Both received gunshot wounds about 10:45 a.m. Wednesday inside of an apartment at the Morgan Building, located at 640
    9th Ave.

Harris and the juvenile were each later charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, according to Huntington Police Capt. Steve Hall and Cabell County Magistrate Court records.

Hall said both of the victims were still alive as of Friday morning.

    Suspect claims he
    acted in self defense

    Michael A. Jones
    Daily Mail Staff

    Wednesday April 05, 2006

An Elkview man charged in the killing of a local choir director told police he acted in self-defense after the two men got into a heated political debate about President Bush.

Jonathan Joseph Lind, 19, was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Edward Ayers, 45. Ayers' body was found in his Kanawha Boulevard apartment Monday.

While walking from the police station to Kanawha County Magistrate Court Tuesday, Lind told reporters he acted in self-defense after Ayers attacked him with a knife.

The incident occurred Thursday night when the two men met at Sears, where Ayers worked as a salesman, said Sgt. Aaron James of Charleston Police's detective bureau. James said police do not know what prompted the meeting but said the two men did not know each other previously.

James said they went back to the apartment, had a few alcoholic drinks and talked. Lind told police that's when they began quarreling over Bush.

"They were arguing over it and ... he claims Mr. Ayers attacked him with a knife and he returned with a hammer," James said.

The apartment was in disarray and showed signs of a violent struggle, James said. He said they recovered a hammer believed to be the weapon used in the slaying.

While Lind contends a political argument prompted the fight, people who knew Ayers said they rarely heard his opinions on the subject.

"He wasn't especially a political person," Jack Hickok said. "He was much more interested in music as much as anything. I'm not saying it didn't happen, but it doesn't sound like him."

Ayers was formerly the choir director at Charleston's Unitarian Universalist Fellowship church, where Hickok attended.

"The only thing I remember is that he didn't have very much interest in political arguments," Hickok said. "It's not so much he didn't care, but he would just change the subject."

Hickock and other members of the church said Ayers had been battling personal problems for years and they'd been concerned about his safety. Hickock said Ayers was openly gay and said some of his encounters along with drinking problems led to the troubles.

In 2004, a scary incident sparked worries among his congregation.

After a night of drinking, Ayers was robbed and badly beaten by an acquaintance he had met in a bar. He wound up in a hospital intensive care unit with severe injuries to his face, and his friends and fellow churchgoers didn't want to see the same thing happen again.

Ayers left for the Humphreys Memorial United Methodist in Dunbar in 2005. The church's minister, the Rev. Okey Harless said Ayers never missed a Sunday service with the exception of vacations.

    Officer Involved Shooting
    April 8, 2006 04:48 PM PDT

Metro police are investigating a shooting involving one of their own. It all started at around 7:00 PM Friday night near Sahara and Maryland Parkway.

Police say people in two different cars in a McDonald's drive thru started to argue. The fight escalated and shots were fired. An officer nearby responded to the scene. Metro says he ordered them to stop shooting, but was forced to defend himself. The officer involved was not hurt and is now on paid leave.

Several people were taken to Sunrise Hospital in critical condition. Since there were so many people firing at once, police can't confirm whether it was the officer that shot the suspects. Metro believes the incident may have been gang related. They're still trying to track down other suspects who ran away from the scene.

    Nuggets' Hodge hospitalized after shooting
Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Denver Nuggets rookie guard Julius Hodge is hospitalized in fair condition following a shooting early Saturday morning.

The Adams County Sheriff's Office said Hodge was driving along Interstate 76 at about 2:00 a.m. when someone inside another vehicle started shooting. Hodge was hit in his lower extremities and taken to a local hospital by another motorist. A motive has yet to be determined.

"We have learned that Julius Hodge was the victim of a shooting this morning," said Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe in a statement. "There is no apparent motive for this shooting and detectives from the Adams County Sheriff's Office are investigating the incident.

"First and foremost, our primary concern is Julius' health. The doctors have informed us that he is in fair condition and is expected to make a full recovery. That is all the information we have at this time. We ask that you respect his privacy."

Hodge was the 20th overall pick of the 2005 NBA Draft out of North Carolina State. He has spent time in the NBA's Developmental League and in 14 games with the Nuggets has averaged 0.9 points and 0.5 rebounds.

To be fair here's a case of self defense:
    Messer held without bond

    Friday, April 7, 2006 8:22 AM CDT

WILLIAMSON - The 19-year-old man accused of double murder appeared before Mingo County Circuit Judge Mike Thornsbury late Thursday afternoon for his bond hearing and pled not guilty to the charges citing self defense.

Melvin Randall Messer allegedly shot 25-year-old Walter Gauze and 25-year-old Christopher Chapman on the left hand fork of Marrowbone Creek Sunday night.
With heavy security in the courtroom, bond was denied by Judge Thornsbury. However, he says the issue will be reconsidered at Messer's preliminary hearing, if more facts are brought out about the case.

During the bond hearing, Mingo County Prosecutor Michael Sparks said that the defendant had a criminal history and had recently been charged with a nighttime burglary in the Breeden area. That charge was dropped when the arresting officer failed to show up for the court date.

There is some indication that those involved in the shooting have been implicated in the burglary with Messer. “One of the deceased may have been a co-defendant in that nighttime burglary,” Sparks told the judge.

Tommy Banig, who was wounded in the incident, may have also been involved in those previous charges against the suspect. Banig's trailer is where the shooting deaths occurred.

Sparks noted that Messer also has a DUI conviction on his past.

“There are mitigating circumstances surrounding this case,” Sparks told Thornsbury. “The victims allegedly had criminal backgrounds.”

Sparks said that the Sheriff's Department was still piecing together the case, and they think that two guns may have been involved in the incident.

Messer turned himself in Wednesday afternoon where he was arraigned by Magistrate Eugene Crum.

Sgt. R.L. Hatfield of the Mingo County Sheriff's Department said officers were dispatched to Marrowbone Creek by 911 dispatch, who had received several calls concerning the shooting.

Hatfield said the initial investigation revealed the two men had gone to the home of Banig and an altercation allegedly occurred in the hallway.

He is now represented by Logan Attorney Rob Kuenzel, who was a court appointed counsel. He appeared with Messer at the bond hearing, along with attorney David Longley, a law partner of Kuenzel.

The weapon used in the shooting was believed to have been a .45 caliber handgun.

There is also evidence that there was another gun involved in the shooting.

The Mingo County Sheriff's Department is investigating the homicides. They were assisted by the West Virginia State Police, who brought in their Mobile Crime Lab to process the scene.

    And another:

Colquitt County-- A Colquitt County judge sentenced Bobby Lewis to more than 40 years in jail for the shooting death of his girlfriend.

49-year-old Robert Lewis claimed self-defense in the 2004 death of 46-year-old Martha Fritts. He claimed that Fritts came after him with a knife. She was shot in the head with a sawed-off shotgun after what Lewis told investigators was a struggle between the two.

Last month, a jury acquitted Lewis of murder but convicted him of voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault and weapons charges.

Superior Court Chief Judge H. Arthur McLane gave Lewis the maximum sentence of 20 years for voluntary manslaughter and several years for charges including aggravated assault and possession of a firearm.

Lewis is currently in the Colquitt County Jail.
