Camps and scouts

I just realised something, there are almost no scouts or camps teaching barefoot survival. Like, imagine being stuck in the wilderness. After some time, your boots could give out.

And there is also a huge lack of barefoot summer camps. You can't bring electronics or junk food from home to summer camp because you are meant to embrace the outdoors and try out new activities. Yet one of the first steps to doing that would be getting kids to ditch the shoes for about 2 months.

I think barefooters should try to start from there more. Begin at the roots. Promote more barefoot camps and stuff or promote barefoot hiking. That will have the biggest effects.

 

I completely agree! Back when I was a scout none of us really dared to bare our feet. Even when we went swimming, we would mostly wear slide sandals! Looking back, it really makes no sense that scouts out of all groups would be so vehemently opposed to bare feet. From what I've seen and heard about American Boy Scouts, they're really peculiar about certain uniform rules, so I wouldn't be surprised if bare feet weren't allowed even in camp!

Perhaps having a few barefoot-friendly scout troops might actually help recruit some new kids, since that would give Boy Scouts more of an image of a "wild", carefree bunch of wilderness explorers - and what kid wouldn't want to be a part of that!

 

Where would you find barefoot survival instructors ?

Like I always laugh at the people that cant make it back to their cars from the beach without shoes on.

I think martial arts classes are the only place your going to get any barefoot survival skills.

Then there is insurance, some kid gets a splinter and the parents or heath insurance someone is going to sue you.

What I liked what I saw once is some activists wanted warning labels on kids shoes that they cause foot deformities.

They do I got them.

Few years of bare footing as an adult somewhat reversed. That one toe got alot better, the nail too. Alot better.

I think there are big differences and shades between the national scouting organizations and between the organizations themselves.

During my scouting time I did attend two big international camps with scouts and guides from all over the world. It was clear that the clothing customs and leading standards did differ quite a lot.

While the US scout movement sometimes seems to be pretty para-militaristic and trying to fit their members into certain schemes, the scouts of other countries seem to have more the chance to find a learning field to develop themselves and try out things (“learning by doing”, one of the scouting principles).

I often was barefoot in the weekly group meetings and at the camps I did attend, and others did practice this too. There was no special barefoot promotion, training or so, just the freedom to try out things and individual fulfilment. I think this is basically the most important idea Badan-Powell had, giving kids a chance to discover about their power and skills and giving them a setting to try out and develop.

The unitary clothing , often confused with a uniform, originally was a way to overcome class and origin distinctions. So, if Baden-Powell wouldn’t have had a career in british military before “inventing” scouting, maybe the scouting togs would be different.

The only bad thing is that he always only did think of boys, but this is overcome in most countries in the world today.

 

Little addition: In scouting the two books “Kim” and “The Jungle Book”, both by R. Kipling, do have a certain significance. In both books the main hero goes barefoot ;-)

Maybe not in the numerous movie adaptions, but in the original novels for sure. There’s one illustration from the first edition of “Kim” where Kim straddles on a Zamzama gun, presenting his bare feet to the world, for example.

 

I’ve seen a few barefoot scouts historically from the 1940’s. Usually cub scouts. None of the boys in this photo have shoes:
I see a few modern examples as well, mostly from Africa/Indonesia. Personally, I think it looks cute to see them barefoot in uniform. It reminds me of young Nick Wilde lol

 

Nice, it's really awesome to see that even today some scouts do occasionally go barefoot - though it seems that this mostly happens in places where bare feet are usually the norm. I'd really like to see my fellow scouts at the forefront of the barefoot movement here in the west. And I agree that barefoot scouts in uniforms are quite cute (as is Nick Wilde)!

And with how many times I've seen blisters from ill-fitting hiking boots and socks soaked with sweat, I guess sometimes to truly "Be prepared" means being ready and willing to ditch shoes altogether and venture through nature in the best "shoes" there are - one's own bare feet!

I am not going to try and dispute the fact the BSA has had its share of problems with the sexual abuse of minors. That is well documented.

I will take exception with your point about the scouts needing "to go into the trash bin of history."

Currently the scouts have one of the best programs in place for the prevention of minor abuse. All adult leaders must be trained and that training is renewed periodically.

Scouting currently provides a wonderful experience for youth. It emphasizes outdoor activity and aims to instill the values of duty to God, country and self in its participants. A youth who eventually earns the rank of Eagle Scout has accomplished something very significant - completing a journey they may have started when they were 6 (or now 5) years old. I have personally seen the impact a well run scouting program can have on many youth. I wish more youth would go through the program, barefoot or shod.

 

What ever I have huge advantage cause I know sobriety is better
