i'm not planning on cooking the whole time.. food will consist of fruits/veggies, nuts and bagels mostly. i don't eat fish.. so no fishing poles.
Ahh--we never catch anything--it's just fun to watch the anticipation of the kiddies. We eat almost vegan because of my son# 2,but some of 'em need some dead cow. Where are you going to camp?
weed, alcohol. If thats your thing. Thats usually the only two things I always remember to take with me lol. and yeah, definitely some cooking utensils. I usually just take a big pot and cook a stew, throw some meat and vegetables into a broth and sit it by the fire for a few hours. edit: i just saw where you said you aren't planning on cooking. still, you can't beat a good stew when it gets dark and the temperature starts to drop.
hey, Boogabaa wishingdeeply here I love camping too. I've been "doing some urban camping now for about six years straight" I'd say go for the scenery spring is on now- maybe some tree leafouts going on next to some river close, or some creek. Young leaves are beautyful lime green....
the friends im going with i'm sure will bring stuff for cooking, because they'll cook. i don't know what else to bring.. if anything.
It's magical sitting around a camp fire with a dark forest pressing in around you and a river making its rushing ,splashing sounds as it flows to the ocean ,while you talk to the ones that stay up the latest to enjoy the last of the fire. It's a great time to forget everything except exactly where you are.
Some stuff I always make sure I have with me when sleeping rough: Plastic can always come in handy. Garbage bags fold down to near-nothing and can help protect you and your gear if it rains. And it obviously gives you something to pack your garbage in, so you can take it back out with you. Take more toilet paper than you think you'll need. Just trust me on that one. A small hatchet or heavy-duty knife is useful for firewood and shaving kindling. Waterproof matches (or matches/lighters in waterproof containers). Leatherman-type tools can be useful. Flashlight and extra batteries. Might consider a radio, either transistor or a wind-up. Don't forget a small emergency medical kit with bandages, painkillers, tummy upset meds, antiseptic wipes etc. I just usually toss a few things into a zip-lock bag and then put it in a plastic margarine container with a snap-on lid. It's lightweight and waterproof. Have fun.
yes a few plastic bags and TP is a good idea. i know the people i'm going with have two emergency kits.. so i'm covered there. i think i have a flashlight.. but i'm one of them people that tries to not use it if i can.
I love camping. If I'm camping I'm either in the mountains climbing/hiking, ski-touring, fishing, hunting, or working. This year is very slow, but I've been getting at least 70 or 80 bag nights a year the last couple.
One thing I never forget is a few empty aluminum water bottles. Keep them by your sleeping bag so you don't have to get out of the tent to piss. Once you piss in it, seal it up, then toss it down to the bottom of your sleeping bag. You now have an instant 98 degree foot warmer. By the time it cools off you should already be asleep(takes about an hour depending on outside degree.) If you are a chick, which you are, get a "Pstyle" or a "go girl" standing female urination device. I bought my girlfriend the Pstyle.
good idea for cold weather camping. i don't think it'll be that cold.. and my feet are usually hot at night.
you guys really come prepared. my camping trips always happen because its like 8 oclock at night and someone notices what a nice night it is so we decide to drive up to the mountains. I'm always rushing out the door trying to stuff my sleeping bag in its sack and tossing an extra shirt and a machete in my pack lol. Machetes are awesome, by the way. add that to your list of things to bring. I never actually cut anything with my machete because it makes me feel guilty to cut down wee little plants, I just end up walking around with it to make myself feel like a bad ass. Its probably more like dumbass. where do you get those?? I've heard of this elusive standing female urination device, but I have yet to see one in any stores.
