I am dying to get away from society. I can't stand the materialism, the superficiality, the soullessness, and the competition... I'm tired of feeling like I'm contributing to something evil and destructive, because the guilt is seriously killing me and not in a nice way.

I have some money saved up and would like to buy remote property in Northern Ontario, build my own abode, and try to eventually be fully self-sufficient and environmentally sound.

I've been looking at some and they all seem to have their own issues... there is one up north I am interested in, but for some reason they only seem to be selling huge packages of land. So even though it's cheap, I still can't afford it on my own and to be honest, I wouldn't even know what to do with that much land. I was hoping to be able to find 4 or 5 likeminded people who would be into that kind of thing.

Has anyone ever done this before? How did you do it? How did it turn out? Would it be bad form/a bad idea to just post a request on an online forum? In this case, there would be more than enough land for everyone... and hopefully we could just buy it together, split it up immediately, and then go on our ways.

If I knew more people, I would ask them... but I'm seriously considering going to strangers. Though I know that could be setting myself up for a disaster.

its too bad that to get away from the material world you are forced to participate by making a large purchase....is that irony?

    i live on Ontario...

i would never share a big purchase unless it was with family or very close friends....too hard to determine some ones intentions without knowing them quite well......

ive known people that really regretted getting into a deal with strangers

in my experience the trick is to buy a small lot adjacent to crown land....there is lots in Ontario

that way you pay nothing for the lot and get to enjoy endless crown land

Yeah, I can see what you mean... people aren't always so reliable.

I've never owned property or a house before so maybe I'm just daydreaming here, and I should stick to what I can afford on my own.

That's a good idea about buying something next to crown land... it's pretty hard to find something cheap, convenient and not polluted by mining or something.
