Hasn't this whole flag thing been done in an episode of South Park? The aboriginies didn't stand a chance when you think about it. The people that went to Australia were originally criminals. So basically the aboriginies had to fight not just English people but the scum of the English race. I think Australia should keep the Queen as the figurehead. Lets face it you either get a nice old lady that waves occasionally or some brute of a man like Bush who bombs people more than occasionally. In a few years time it will be King William and he seems like a good enough guy. I think every country hates another country (or has rivalry etc). Lets face it the Aussies hate the English thing because of their heritage. The Brits hate the French. The last nation to actually beat England in any war were the Normans. (French). Really is The Queen that bad?
what do you mean when you say every countries hates another country, i have no hate for a country, a country is a very wide description. i just believe it is the ignorance of a person if they say a racist comment such as 'oh i hate the french'. what you hate everything about them, one thing, a few, the people, the culture, what!!! i can't stand the pride most british have about themself, oh we brought you rock and roll, or we used to rule the world, or we havn't lost a war in ages. that was the past, where the people who just happnened to live in the same regional area of the world did these things. doesn't mean we should be proud, we should have knowledge of our history, but not make arragant statements claiming we have done more or are better than others. the queen doesn't really do anything, so i am not that passionate about getting rid of the royalty, but if a vote was cast i would vote out royalty because of what it stands for. its basically a historically justified dictatorship on paper. they do not stand for modern britain or the democracy our prime minister preaches about. peacex
Gary, I love the queen. She is a total hottie. But what say does she have in the running of our country? very little. Its time to proclaim our independence. Its a pride thing.
Yeah and a lot of today's youth love our flag and show it off on numerous occasions. Didn't you see the scenes at the Sydney olympics? People wore the flag everywhere
Sorry tricks but sports fans tend to be conservative. And i think today's youth are fed on a diet of intellectual shit and pop culture media...could you imagine if we actually gave them a REAL reason to love our country
For me its more than not being proud of the current administration -- its the knowledge that the history of my country is rooted in genocide against indigenous people, that its wealth was built through slavery, and that its continued wealth and power are built on a system of maintaining massive inequality at home and abroad through the use and threat of massive force -- a policy implemented as enthusiastically by Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, Carter, and Clinton as by Eisenhower, Nixon, Reagan, and the Bushes. I have deep loyalty to the land and to the people, and compassion for those who have been sent to fight its wars, but no loyalty to flag or government. As to what my ancestors fought for, they fought to free Ireland from the British Empire, and I think today they would be on the side of those struggling against the U.S. Empire
A whole lot were Irish political prisoners -- pitting one people you've oppressed against another, just like the British colonizing Northern Ireland with Scotts . .and like the whole sad story of Israel/Palestine.
I don't know much about wars in England and Australia. Shows what American history focuses on, eh? While I do appreciate the attitude of rebellion against an oppressive regime, as shown by the revolutionary war, I'd like to see anyone try that today. It's called treason now. Double standard? I was born in America, and have yet to leave. A friend of mine wants to create his own nation, and he's dead serious. I think it's a great idea. We've both just given up on America. I don't see any real hope for the nation anytime soon. He even designed his own flag. Black, blue, and gold for the night sky, ocean (He wants an aquatic nation), and I can't remember the symbolism in the gold. Would I burn the American Flag? Yep. It's fun to watch the U.S. rednecks squirm. Would I burn the flag of my friend's nation? Yep. So would he. We like fire, and would consider burning our flag to be a high compliment.

I'm a sports fan and i am not conservative but i must say you are a little bit ignorant. Do you block your ears or not watch any telly at all? Aussies are forever being loud and proud at sporting events, how can you have missed that. Also, don't you see the Aussies that turn out every year to watch the Anzac day parade, the Anzac dawn service and go to Gallipoli every year? You don't give the youth of this country any credit and i don't think you know your own generation like you think. They would be quick to defent us and stick up for us, i would bet money on it. We may act like a bunch of rat bags on occasion but we know what matters and what's important.
Aussie Aussie Aussie OI OI OI is hardly any reason to start having faith in people. Until I see Australians going round with axes, cutting their televisions open and starting to think...i'll keep on whinging. Don't call me ignorant, i know you're smart and its not hard to see the average Australian cares more about who wins the footy than who wins the election. At least some of us need to tune out and start whining about things that matter...and anyway, how is becoming independent from a monarchy which makes none of our decisions going to destroy any of the pride you speak of? Lets get off the topic of sport, if we changed the flag, they'd go to the olympics and wave that one, whats the difference? And I don't see any reason why we can't celebrate our own UNIQUE contributions to war as a republic. We're Anzacs, not poms. Oh yeah, If you read my post you'll find I did not have a go at our youth at all, its all the shit that gets fed down our throats that i hate.
But Tricks its not the flag of the indigenous people who were burning it. To them it represents oppression and inequality; what does blue, red and white mean to the Aboriginal Australian? They don't identify with those colors...and defny not the images of the union jack and southern cross. Natives are involuntary minorities. They are not immigrants who came of their own will--this excludes aboriginals, native indians, african slaves--to find a better life. Involuntary minorities are peoples who have had their wills taken away. Flag burning as an expression should be respected. Obviously its something someone feels strongly enough about. If Aussie's/American's/whoever's get their panties all bunched because their precious flags are burn'n they'll look and realize how much culture and tradition those symbolic flags have burned themselves. It should be the law that all caucasians have to read Penny McIntosh's White Privilege...do a google search and realize.
It might have not been their culture's flag but it is their nations. So what, we should havea flag about aboriginality? What the hell does that mean to us? I know a lot of people with aboriginal culture that love our flag and fly it proudly. It isn't as many aboriginals that hate our flag as much as people think. Flag burning should be respected? Are you kidding? Well i understand you sympathise with them, it is "your" flag burning out there and i can't believe you don't have a negative view on that. Have you never flown it? Or had anything with the flag on it? You are so idealistic. The majority of people see our flag burning and are disgusted. It in no way with change the view of the majority regarding these issues, not when there is no respect for the white Aussies of today and what we stand for. It goes both ways you know! Also we don't need to google anything, people know what our history is and i would appreciate you not acting so high and mighty. You act like you know things the rest of us don't, you've only been around 5 years more than me mate and there have been heaps on this earth before you. What does it tell you that when knowing our history, that we all still feel the way we do? We feel strongly about our side as well and why not. The English were wrong, but i am not going to let anyone say that this isn't my country and ithat i can't fly my flag which i have grown up with and loved as a symbol of our land. Like i have said previously, that flag is for us all, if some people chose to feel differently than so be it. If some want to separate the blacks and whites then it's to your detriment but the majority think of us as one and it's unfortunate, that the minority get all the coverage. They never show all the aboriginals who love our flag, and think we live under one flag. But then, some only see what they want to?
Tricks I am not trying to offend. But I firmly believe that if the US came and subdued Australia and made it part of the United States and Countries of America you'd be pretty quick to dissasociate yourself with the USCA flag...and you might even burn it in protest because you've had all your Aussie traditions like barbies and footy and cricket taken away. You'd have to play baseball and grid iron and ice hockey. You'd have to wear your own clothes, lil dasiy duke skirts and Slayer shirts to public schools. You'd probably get sued just about every 6 or 7 minutes because you violated someone's conceptual space. I'm just saying. Be careful not to oversee from 'one' perspective.
You make it sound like we want your little island. And you act like every American is a cultureless, mindless idiot. The stereotypical Australian is a beer-swilling, croc-wrestling, woman-hating, pocket-picking, footy-watching sheep fucker with a dune buggy. Some Americans are smarter than that. Some of us don't see everything on the planet as a money-making opportunity. You're confusing America with Americans. And you wouldn't like it if we compared Mr Howard to everything else Australian. Anyway I think we should take Madagascar. The flora and fauna are much prettier and we could take it in a day or two. McDonalds on every corner by the end of the week.
but.......memilesaway from my US of A, and its ok. But just ok...it's no Croatia! I just thought that if I was gonna oppose someone who's native to the country I'm livin in I'd use my own country to pose the example. I dig the message you're humm'n with some, but I've done enough continent hopp'n to know that isolationism is alive and well in the American mentality. Madagascar thing is brilliant though....I'm all over it they got spider monkies I think. possibly a respost..can't member
No dude, it's all about the mantellas. The only Isolationism I want is that the Feds stay off my land and out of my life.
You took the "I hate the French" thing a bit too seriously. I don't mean hate as in I want to kill every French person because in reality the Brits and the French are very alike as are the Brits and Aussies. There isn't much of a culture shock if you go to Paris is there? There is however this underlying need to laugh at them. Its the same with the Scots. They hate the English. They don't really hate the English cos if they did I wouldn't live here but they love it when we lose at sport. How is the monarchy a dictatorship? Does the Queen oppress us in any way? Does she have any say over the politics in this country. I hate the house of lords thing but the royal family are our history and why shouldn't we be proud sometimes. Its too easy to whinge about the bad things and I don't think The Queen is one of them. People say the monarchy are out of touch which is why Prince Harry was caught smoking weed of course. We already have an elected leader in Tony Blair and through his party and the whole parliament system laws get passed. Just because we don't like some laws doesn't make it a dictatorship. Britain is too small to have a president. I can understand the US having one because there are a large number of states and I can understand Australia doing a similar thing but Australia aren't governed by The Queen. She is just a symbol. I happen to believe monarchies and principalities work better than republics.
i find no need to laugh at others culture. i see sport no reason to be patriotic, i used to play a lot of sports, but i am not competative, i don't support our country. i just happen to live here that is all. i am human not english. on paper the monarchy is a dictatorship, did we elect them? no, they see officially have to choice the gov't and sign all the laws, other there is no power, symbolically on paper, its seems we have a dictatorship. its a bit hypocritical to hate the lords but like the queen because of tradition because i believe that is the only arguament for keeping them both. i am not proud of what people did, who just happened to live on the same territory as i do now. too small for a president, huess what a rebublic isn't based on size, france is a republic, and has a president, france is the same size as us. i prefer republics than a monarachy because i do honestly believe in the principles of freedom and representation. peacex
