I recently went into a thrift store for the first time in a while to kill some time. I like to go in and check out the books and cd's as there is always something interesting. Sure enough I found several gems---2 CD's to a Howling Wolf 3 CD boxset (disk 1 and 3) that is apparently a complete collection of his blues. The Yes album, by Yes, which I think is an iconic 1970's FM radio album. And the reason for this post: Humble Pie's, Smokin' album. Smokin' to me was the iconic LP that you would put on when some friends were over in your living room or basement getting high. I didn't have it myself. But I do remember sitting around in several people's houses back in the 70's smoking joints or a bhong, and Smokin' was playing on the record player. Probably the best known song was, 30 Days in the Hole, and this album has the version where they are in the studio fooling around, trying to get the vocals in the mood, and start with a harmony 30 days in the hole, before the guitar starts the actual song-----oh wait----there's a YouTube of that version. So, for you kids that don't know what kind of music you should really be listenin' to when you're gettin' buzzed: alright, alright, alright, alriiight
Well, Hell. I guess if you're just sittin' around with your buddies gettin' high, you might as well listen to the full album. There's some good deep cuts. But you'll have to imagine someone getting up, pulling the record out of the sleeve, turning on the stereo, and then the sound of the needle dropping onto the record and the scratching noises before the first song------but here you go----next stop, 1972:
OK----it only played that didn't work-----it only copied over the first song. Just go to YouTube and search Humble Pie Smokin full album
Oh yes, I have both vinals. Love the opening to 30 Days. On the Yes Album my favorite cut is The Clap. Steve Howe leaves the guitar strings smoking by the end.
