Funny how that works. I went barefoot into Office Depot one day. As I entered, there was a female greeter just inside the door. I thought it was going to be a bad experience. As I entered, she smiled big and said, "Hello Sir, welcome to Office Depot. Is there anything I can help you find today?" That certainly put me at ease. Then a male employee walked up to her. Again, I thought I'd get some attitude. The greeter spoke to him and said "Joe, would you help this man find the things he needs?" With that I followed barefoot behind the guy to go get what I needed - never a comment about my feet. It was great!

I guess I still brace myself for negativity, but realistically, I've found few places that are anti bare feet. In fact, I've often found just the opposite. As in this case at Office Depot, I often get a level of service and politeness I don't usually experience when I'm wearing shoes.

Excellent! I think any negativity is often inside our own heads. Most people don't care if we are barefoot or not!

I definitely have far more stories about positive reactions than negative. Most of the time people just don't seem to care. Maybe after I leave they snicker, but I'm old enough I don't care - as long as they don't ask me to wear shoes!

My local Target is one of the places I frequent barefoot and I've never had an issue. However, once I was in a local drug store that I go into barefoot all the time and as I was walking to the register the manager walked by me and goes "Are you done?" When I looked at him like "???" He says "You have to wear shoes." After I assured him I was checking out he didn't say anything and I went on my way. I've since been back many times and no one has said anything so who knows.

Gotta admit - I LOVE the way the store's floors feel on my barefoot.

Thanks for your comments. Personally, my experience at that one Target is more the anomally than the norm. Realistically, I have few problems going most anywhere barefoot. I know there are some people with second thoughts about showing their feet in public. I created a thread titled "Share Your Positive Experiences" to capture the joys, successes, and acceptance of bare feet. Hopefully this will help people "on the fence" realize that being barefoot in public is fun, comfortable, accepted, and really not a big "risk." If it's comfortable outside (i.e., I don't like freezing my soles), I don't even think about wearing shoes to go out. In fact shoes, even flip-flops, feel strange when I do wear them.
