This post made me so thankful to be in New Zealand. Do you guys really have to go to special stores to get dairy products from grass-fed cows? That really sucks. Factory farming is destroying our diets.
I was at costco today and saw they had the magic bullet so I picked it up. Sounds like a sex toy. $44.99 for the whole kit, not bad. I can use it for smoothies and juicing which I want to start doing also. Two questions, first how long does the energy last from this? All day or is there some kind of crash? And also, if I made some for halfway through the day and put it in the fridge at work would it separate and get all nasty? Thanks for posting this I think it will help.
I don't like the sound of putting that amount of butter into my system... (corn-fed or not) I've read a few articles on this, and it may or may not work...(if you do other activities, too - like fasting) It would be great if it was as simple as drinking buttered coffee...(but it never is) Two things I need: lower my cholesterol level. Less weight on my stomach. But, nagh, not my cup of tea (pardon the pun) I'm sure he is really persuasive in his infomercials... I hope he makes his millions selling people all of his products... But he isn't getting any money out of me... http://www.bulletproofexec.com/bulletproof-fasting-results/ http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/a...s-waistlines-improves-cognitive-function.html
My cholesterol and blood pressure are perfect, my problem is energy and I end up fasting from being too busy to eat.. and I really want to improve my diet overall. I'll give it a try anyway, it makes sense to me.
My blood pressure is fine. My cholesterol is high: 6.1 (what's yours, btw?) It's probably due to smoking and drinking for the past 20 odd years. 6 years ago my overall health was 'perfect'. It isn't anymore - but damn good considering. But putting that amount of butter into my system, for god only knows how long (If you stop you'll probably end up putting on the lbs again) - just seems a bit too much. I really want to improve my diet/health, overall, too. I'll reduce the booze and cigarettes and add more veg instead of this. That seems something I can maintain a lot longer - perhaps for good. Let us all know how it works out for you...
New research is telling us that saturated fats (like those in butter) aren't bad for you after all. It's crazy how what people consider "Healthy" is constantly changing. Butter used to be the enemy and margarine was the way to go. I'm a vegetarian with vegan tendencies, so I try and avoid animal products when possible. Coconut oil is a great substitution...I often eat it plain by the tablespoon . And avocados, too. But I don't think you need bulletproof coffee to be healthy--it's just one way of many. Just eat a lot of whole foods, like you mentioned, and cut back on sugar and bad fats. And cutting way, way back on smoking couldn't hurt either. You have the right idea, I think. I'm sure you know all this but just some words of encouragement. But yes, deviate, I'm fascinated to see how it works for you!
I need to get a Magic Bullet. I have been using a regular blender, which works well enough, but the MB seems more practical. As far as energy goes, a cup will provide about 6-8 hours of energy and cognitive clarity. It's often used in conjunction with intermittent fasting, where a person will skip breakfast using bulletproof coffee in place of food. Because you're consuming fat and not protein or carbs, your body stays in a fasted state despite the calories consumed from the butter and MCTs. The fat from the butter and MCTs give you an added boost in terms of energy and fat burning. Of course it's not necessary that you fast while drinking it, but a single cup will satisfy your hunger for hours while keeping you going for at least half the day (or until you decide to eat your first meal). To each their own. But many people drink bulletproof coffee without actually buying Asprey's 'Upgraded' coffee and MCT oil. I personally use Green Mountain Sumatran Reserve coffee -- an organic dark roast coffee -- and NOW Foods MCT Oil. As long as you use a good quality coffee and grass-fed butter, there is no need to spend the extra money on Asprey's products. As far as cholesterol levels, saturated fats from healthy, whole food sources like butter and coconut oil do not raise bad cholesterol levels, but lower it while raising good cholesterol levels.
Margarine is actually one of the worst things a person can eat, because it's loaded with all sorts of nasty oils containing trans fats, free radicals and emulsifiers and preservatives, among other things you shouldn't be putting into your body. The margarine craze came about in the 80s and 90s, when saturated fat was being demonized as contributing to heart disease. Funny that since low-fat diets gained momentum during this time, heart disease, high blood pressure and high cholesterol have skyrocketed. Trans fats and polyunsaturated fats are the two fats people need to be weary of.
I'm still confused with all the 'good fat' and 'bad fat' crap. The blood test I had said there wasn't anything wrong with the level of 'good fat' in my system - it was the 'bad fat'... The Dr suggested more nuts, oats, grain bread, more beans, fewer potatoes etc. Being a veggie (and a lazy swine) I was relying on eggs, cheese, waffles, coleslaw, pasta sauce and potatoes far too much. I generally have always tried to not include too much extra salt and sugar, and I obviously avoid meat and animal fats (probably why I'm lazy but ok health wise)... But what I have found out now is that there was a LOT of hidden 'baddies' in the things that I was eating... I thought because I wasn't fat I was healthy. Clearly this isn't always true. I've had that wake up call... It wasn't the most flawless point I've ever made...
I try to convince my father that margarine is the devil but he simply won't believe me, or perhaps doesn't care. Most people don't want to hear about things that should cause them to worry, though.
I have found that what causes high cholesterol is not things like butter, eggs, meat, etc. but rather sugar and starchy foods. Basically, anything that spikes your blood sugar and causes instability in insulin levels. Most of a person's cholesterol comes from the liver -- not from the food they eat. It's been found that eating too much fructose can contribute to a fatty liver comparable to people who are alcoholics, so it makes sense that consuming too much sugar can release a lot of bad triglycerides into the bloodstream, because all that sugar needs to be processed by the liver, and when the liver is being overtaxed it becomes fatty, and some of that fat is then released into the bloodstream. This would also explain why many people who are heavy drinkers have high cholesterol.
To be honest.. I don't know. I just went to the dr recently because I had chest pain. Overall I feel like I'm falling apart, and I know it's my lifestyle that needs to change. But anyway, he took blood and did all the tests like bp and listening to my heart and lungs. Said everything was great and based on my age, he thinks it was just stress or acid reflux from drinking beer right before bed. And that if it happens again he's going to do an EKG and stress test and all that. I probably should know the numbers, I think bp was 118 over 80, and that was going in midday while having a stress filled morning at work putting the rear subframe back in a rusted out Honda from New Hampshire. Either way it was a wake up call, and he's really pushing me to quit smoking too. Which I know I need to do. I quit for 7 years and just started again 2-3 years ago like an idiot. And I need to cut back on the booze. When I smoked weed all day everyday I was way more healthy and actually wanted to exercise, clean, eat healthier. I probably need to go back to that.
How do you feel about those folks who seem to eat the Standard American Diet, drink, smoke, and not exercise and still manage to live until a ripe old age? Not that I'm encouraging anyone to do those things, but I think genetics are important.
No. I simply suggested something that has been working for me. I never said everyone will reap the same benefits, though I think many people CAN if they follow a healthy diet.
ah rat i was joking. I might try this. I'll have to stop at the health food store on the way home from work tommorow and get that oil though
Damn, you should be a nutritionist. And that's exactly what I need it sounds like. I always skip breakfast from lack of time, unless I didn't eat dinner then I come into work bitching that I need food before I can work. But usually I will work through the hunger until about 4 oclock. Or drink a coke around 1 or 2. Horrible I know. That's why I'm intrigued by this, I think it will save me a lot of issues if I start doing it regularly. If you have a costco card it's $44.99 for the bullet. It has a shit ton of attachments in that deluxe kit and is even a coffee grinder. Cheapest I can find one online is $69 on amazon.
