Pictures are just a google image examples but the streets where I live have that sloped concrete on the edges for drainage and I found walking on that slope like a balance beam you have to really grip with your feet and get the best foot workout ever.

At first it was more difficult as I had to work on my balance to stay in the middle of the slope without stumbling off the edge if I walked quick.

You of course have to do equal distance in both directions because the the foot on top has to grip in a different way then the foot on the bottom.

Anyway my feet got tougher and stronger in 2 weeks of doing this on 30 minute walks then I was getting back when I was doing really long hikes when everything was closed because of corona that included much rougher sections of street with the large stones in the asphalt.

That gripping with the toes to stay on the slope gives that same feeling in the foot muscles as weight lifting does on arms and legs.

I'm glad they managed to fix your account.
I once used to go hunting with boots and all. Didn't venture in deep water so much because of boots full of water and having to clean them from mud afterwards. Now I go in the darnedest places and mud is not a drag any more but a treat. I even got some degree of resistance to thorns. The only thing that really pushes me back are heel cracks in my right foot only, left one is immune from them. Marching barefoot on cross country terrain also will develop calf muscles in a way that no amount of gym or shod sports can and this is an official statement.
My last hike. I left the road and went for the river. The dry bottom was half rocks and half mud. Greatest fun in months lol. I don't get much of it anyway he he.

@jagerhans You Mediterranian folks always get the good stuff early. My neck of the woods still has a meter of snow. In places even more. All the trails are packed full of the evil white shit.

I know when I lived in California BF hiking these trails strongest my calves ever got, nothing in the gym gets results even close.
Now in a Florida beach town no hills I will never have calves like that again. I think barefoot hiking you exercise the entire calf muscle instead of just one part of it.

But the new method walking the "balance beam" on that sloped concreate is still kick ass, I thought peak foot toughness was something I left back in California.

A quarter mile on that slope in each direction gets the result of miles and miles of regular barefoot street hiking.

Thats the truth about the calves! 180 calf raises with 3 plates, sit down type. Every leg day, doing two leg days in a row to fry them good.

Just no way to possibly get max muscles with feet jammed in shoes.

    There so complex

Just like with other gym exercise I don't seem to get sore from walking the slope anymore I guess the muscles adapted.

Looks like jammed in a shoe the foot muscles don't get to do much.

Full time shoe people wouldn't make it 10 meters on terrain like that barefoot.

I thought it was all about getting thicker skin when I got the idea to see if I could adapt to bare footing. Its more like learning to walk again and it becoming automatic.

I remember back in the full time shoe days something like standing barefoot on an extension ladder would hurt. To much pressure on one spot standing on single rung. Was on a extension ladder last week didn't hurt at all.

Its not just thicker skin the muscles get stronger. So much more to it then I thought.

And no one warned me once you learn to go barefoot you might hate wearing shoes again. Thats what happened. Never saw that coming.

you told it all the way it really is.
it's not just about tougher skin but also stronger muscles, like bracing your abdomen to absorb a punch. and you may even not fit anymore into your old shoes anyway ;) i have a super hard time trying to slip back into those heavy swedish made combat boots i used to wear all the time... feet got wider and also thicker in height. btw i remember that i bought them when i had to go take the physical examination in the italian navy... in a week those new things scraped a hole in my right ankle, i could barely walk.
i put on a pair of shoes yesterday, for like 3 minutes, a year since the last time. had to pour hydrochloric acid. but was also sporting rubber gloves, goggles and facemask.

Google and all the searches suck now.

They never show forum posts anymore. And how does the website "world of walks" and that title out rank me searching the title exactly ?

WebMD .... F those big corporate websites.

I wanted this forum to write the guide how to build strong tough feet, wtf we are the ones who know how not some dumb ass staff writer at "Web MD"

"big tech" can F off. Thats why I try and keep using these forums that have not been swallowed up yet.

Well anyway don't over do balance beam "slope walking"

Its kind of abrasive too, maybe cause I got faster and better at it wore down the skin a bit and hurt.

    Moderation !

The slope walking exercise, that I cut back on but still do seems to have strengthened and raised my feet lateral longitudinal arch

My footprint wet feet walking around still looks similar to the 1st image, very narrow on the side

But the lateral longitudinal arch part never gets dirty at all anymore.
