brrr...cold in steamboat at night!

blue skyes out my window, but a little breezy. I work in a restaurant with an outdoor patio and we have had to close it a lot recently due to rain. I don't forsee a fire ban, this is one of the wetter summers we have had in a while.

 

exactly my point..rainbow always brings plenty of rain & historicaly has ended even the worse droughts

utah had snow above your knees the 1st few days i was there..i stayed in the truck till it melted..& i remember more then a few folks were barefoot, i ended up given em a few pairs of socks which we then wrapped up in duct tape to make makeshift boots..lets hope folksare a bit more prepared for this year
i don't think we'll get snow, but it will get near freezing at night
best to stay near a fire all night & sleep in the morn..damn i wish i had my tipi already, but probly wont have it till next years

 

I was at the Spring Council and the National (planning on coming back) and the environs that I noticed were Mosquitoes and Cold nights. The Mosquitoes are aggressive, sometimes even biting in the sunlight. Our *natural* DEET free shit was worthless after a few minutes, thus the retreat by us for another day. (baby being biten)...there was also lack of *safe* water. THere were filters being used though...
no shuttle yet...

Seed Camp isn't as fun as I thought;P Spring Council was okay. Though the *consensus* is a fake...Rob *told us* where the site was. There weren't any *proposals* to the gathered circle.

Just a few days ago, the ONLY wet spot on the map was Steamboat. I can see why they picked that sight. Too bad it's in a friggin' Mosquito Swamp.

The fire noted by DrumminMama isn't in La Veta, it's just over the hill (mountain) from my Mother's house, on rt. 160 Pass Creek/Mato Vega and Paradise Acres...my old stomping' grounds...

The National site is SOGGY w/moss...bring tarps. Also it's a burner in the day...bring lots of Sunscreen...UV index is rated 9 out of 13

 

nothing ever works against the mosquitos at gatherings, but, they only bite the 1st 2 days there, get allittle dirty & hang around a fire alot & dont use any scented products & in 2 days they stop bitting you & start bitting the clean fresh new arrivals
i've even triedsme stuff comando's use in the jungle & it dinothing, but soke & dus& muddoes he trick everytime (and good ow sweehigh garlic diet) in 2 days

 

Dunno. Probably not, I'm not a hippy type, just don't like all the bad mouthin that is going on around town, so I thought I'd jump online and see what this rainbow thing is all about. I am curious though...

 

You guys could be better tippers but that's about the worst I can say about you

 

wellthat may be true, alotta the early folks are gettin there on a wing & a prayer with pennies to spare, but iguarantee the overal impact on the local economy will make ya very happy (around the 7th would be a good time to ask for a huge raise)

 

i know for a fact theres day trippers,, motels will be full for miles around,, an they will be sooooooo happy to get "real food".. not to mention the federal law enforcement agents,, who im sure are already there,, they gotta eat..

shit if ya feel law enforcement is a calming thing,, yall as a community are safer than ya ever been..

A word about the fireban if it does go in place... I too am a local Lis, and this has most definitely NOT been one of the wetter summers. Yes we had a great winter, but since April we have been well below average in terms of rain and precipitation. Last summer was a wetter summer than average hence why you don't see a ban into place, we had loads of rain and snow all through April May and June of 2005 (in fact we had a snowMemorial weekend and also sometime mid-June). Peak run-off didn't hit until around now. If you look at summers before 2005 you will see numerous fire bans going into effect at the beginning of July.

Look Rainbow folks, I have nothing against your views and opinions, I'm glad to see different faces in Steamboat. But I do ask that if there is a fireban, please obey it. The area you are camping was the site of a blow-down years ago... those blow-down trees have since been subject to lots of beetle-kill. The beetle-kill has also spread to standing trees, creating dead stands of forest as well. If a fireban goes into effect it has nothing to do with the Rainbows being there and has everything to do with the fact that our summer thusfar has been abnormally dry, warm, and windy, and the fire danger is very real. There was a forest fire in the North Routt region in 2002, so the area is not exempt from fire danger.

Just please respect fire laws, every other local and visiting camper obeys these bans when they go into effect out of respect for the forest, the people, and the hard-working fire-fighters that have to put themselves in harms way if a fire were to start. Respect the forest by respecting any firebans.

we have never ever started any, in fact we've put out fires started by drunk firefighters, & with a 10 mile bucket brigade put out the wy forreszst fire after the fs firefighters gave up & went home

soaringeagle, I'm not saying you ever have started a fire, I've read the past reports on your gatherings so I am aware of the positive impact you could have. I'm simply saying, be aware of the condition of the land where you are gathering right now, and be aware of the fire dangers that exist on that land at this moment... because the danger is real and increasing as this hot, dry weather continues. If you aren't careful it's not out of the realm of possibilities that you could start one. All I've read in this post concerning the fireban is people pointing the finger at the USFS saying that if they institute a ban they're only doing it because of the rainbows... no, they're doing it to protect the forest and also to protect the people gathered there including the rainbow family.

what hes sayin about fire nazis is we habve our own folks who inspect every fire, make sure theres no personal fires, & all firepits are safeas can be with plenty of water on hand in case of any problems, the pits are done to illiminate any chance of future root fires & the areas cleared of debri, the fires are the centers of fucus,
we;'ve been doin thos for years we know how to do ir eight, so we appreciate your voice in this, but the point is, its our voices saying he same thing here
at near freezing firesare necasary, but only communal fires & safe, kitchens can use propane if appropriate, but cook fires are the safest of all
as for blis pit fires, they cannot get out of control with 50 people huddled around it for warth & entertainment we call the fire hippy tv cause we watch it closely for hours on end
