    ...

The Premier Football League has cancelled ALL football games for well into next week because of the passing away of the Queen.
Well she was a lovely Queen and the best of a mostly poor lot of Royals.
I am very saddened to see her go.
    BUT.
I think the current blanket coverage of her passing on the BBC and other News and current affair programs is way over the top.
And now absolutely no football for around a week has really hissed me off.
How will I cope without my Football on Sky and Prime TV and BT.
    I don't know.

Premier League and the FA CANCEL all football this weekend | Daily Mail Online

The Premier League and the Football Association have postponed all matches this weekend following the death of Queen Elizabeth despite the UK Government stating they were under no obligation to do so.

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) held a call with all major sports at 9.30am to determine the plan of action for the rest of this weekend's calendar and left the decision over events up to the individual organisations.

However, the Premier League and EFL released a statement saying they had made the decision to postpone this weekend's fixtures to honour Queen Elizabeth's 'extraordinary life and contribution to the nation'.

    ...........
The Premier League released the following statement: 'At a meeting this morning [Friday], Premier League clubs paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

'To honour her extraordinary life and contribution to the nation, and as a mark of respect, this weekend's Premier League match round will be postponed, including Monday evening's game.'

Richard Masters, Premier League Chief Executive, added: 'We and our clubs would like to pay tribute to Her Majesty's long and unwavering service to our country.

'As our longest-serving monarch, she has been an inspiration and leaves behind an incredible legacy following a life of dedication.

'This is a tremendously sad time for not just the nation but also for the millions of people around the world who admired her, and we join together with all those in mourning her passing.'

    ........

Piers Morgan and Gary Neville criticse Premier League's postponement of matches | Daily Mail Online

BT Sport pundit Crouch - who starred as a striker for England and Liverpool - said the Queen could have had a better send-off from players observing silences, singing the national anthem and showing their respect on the pitch.

'I know it’s only a game and some things are much bigger but imagine all our games went ahead this weekend.

'Black armbands, silences observed, national anthem, Royal band playing etc to the millions around the world watching ? Isn’t that a better send off?'

Meanwhile, Piers Morgan and Gary Neville also took to social media to express their disappointment at the decision to cancel this weekend's fixtures.

They felt that football could have united the nation and offered the Queen the respect she deserves.

Morgan Tweeted: 'Ridiculous decision'. He went on to say: 'Sporting events should go ahead. a) The Queen loved sport and b) It would be great to see/hear huge crowds singing the National Anthem in tribute to Her Majesty, as West Ham fans did so magnificently last night.'

To which Neville replied saying: 'I agree Piers. Sport can demonstrate better than most the respect the Queen deserves'.

I tend to agree, especially as so many other sports are going ahead this weekend as normal.

It would have been better to play the matches, and let the fans show their respect to the Queen by holding a minutes applause or even a minute's silence.

I agree about the coverage ,it has been OTT but then again its a situation we find ourselves in that hasnt happened before in recent times. The last time being the mourning and funeral of King George VI way back in 1952.

Another difference and whilst I am sure King George VI was well liked his reign was relatively short in comparison to the Queen , The passing of the Queen as come as a shock to the world as she has been an ever present and now sadly she is gone .

The Queen being like she is wouldnt want everything cancelled either as she was very fond of Sport( equestrian ) and the Arts .

I think one has to draw a balance.
It is; I feel a generational thing.
    .
She was of an age when those of similar age remember the young Princess thrust into a World of Post-war difficulties and throughout her reign of considerable years has maintained a stability of dignity.
    - And therfore due respect to those of an age, to 'take this all in'
    .
-- For those of younger age generation/s her impact has been less influential than was, and understandably doesn't have the same relevance
    .
In short, though I miss the Sport and substantial coverage there has been/is at the moment is understandable - ethically, if nothing else.
    .
The Queen's passing is someting where the impact has been felt across the globe (see my Death of 'the last true Monarch' (Be Respectful) thread)
    .
The Qatar Football World Cup is a choice - which has seen much more disruption - whereas, this is a matter of respectful acknowledement both of the Monarch and indeed - a Nation's people, that only affects a much more shorter period - and, is unlikely to happen again

    ‘Going to their employment WOLF?
    You must be joking.
Most people, particularly those in the CivilService are already shirking from home.
Nice ‘work’ if you can get it!
