I can't say i fully understand or agree with the definition KC gave for "redneck" though. Even when you google it the definitions are it being a negative slang for a bigot. Most of my family lives in the South and even they'd agree that a redneck is someone who is a bigot and rascist. So that one confuses me quite a bit. No offense to KC, but I see it a bit like someone who has a confederate flag because it's "a symbol of the heritage" and argues how it's not a symbol for rascism.

Maybe KC can explain this one further.

in the southwest, the desert southwest primarily, as in a great deal of country music, 'redneck' is being repossessed by the people it insults. i'm not from the south, so i can't speak for the south. but the vast majority of rednecks i know take the word to mean working white poor.

so anyway, people who complain about not being able to use a word that a certain group of people use within their group forget that typically these words are being rejected as insults. "******" comes with loads of negative connotations, and by taking over that word, they've reduced it's influence. in terms of redneck, well, nearly every person called a "redneck" is called such STRICTLY because they look like some stereotypical image of a bigotted KKK member or such. so many people were called that just because someone somewhere decided that all working white poor, trailer trash, etc, MUST be an uneducated racist pig. but those people, the ones who were dismissed and categorized with a glance, have decided "fuck you." now you've got amusing songs like "redneck yacht club" and other references. country doesn't mean stupid, white doesn't mean racist, poor doesn't mean not working.

definitely word usage and the connotations, etc of said word usage can be much different depending on the region, country, and various other factors.

it still weirds me out hearing the use of the word "fag" over here a lot. but the brits just mean a cig ... if they went to the states and said "can i have a fag" then people would think they were looking for a bit of bum fun.

the redneck thing intrigues me a bit. i know in my distant family there is one bigot that dates my aunt and everyone calls him the redneck of the family. i think i'd rather be considered a hick or a hillbilly because of being poor and white rather than be connotated as being a redneck. hell i'd almost even go so far as rather being called white trash than being called a redneck.

i've unfortunately never been to the southwest either and well am not a fan of country music at all (though used to be forced to listen to it when i lived with my sister); so well, again bit clueless about the whole culture on that quadrant of the States.

anyway the whole conversation reminds me a bit of Clerks II with the whole "porch monkey" thing. if you haven't seen it though you won't know what the hell i'm talking about. and god forbid someone take that the wrong way. *sigh*

yeah, my family is mostly wealthy northerner and west coast. my father took one look at my husband and said "he's a redneck, i don't like him." that's the problem with the word "redneck." EVERYONE gets painted with one ugly brush. he looks like a redneck, so he must be a dirtbag bigot. the hypocricy is not lost on those tarred by the epithet unfairly. so they're taking it back. it's just what people do. if they're going to be called a redneck by some asshole who knows nothing about them, they're damned well going to give it their own meaning. more power to 'em, i say.

it's all because white people secretly desire to be black or darker skinned. thus the tanning. at least ... that is what i decided ages ago. though i honestly see no point in just laying around lazily trying to soak rays (or uv lights in the case of sunbeds).

I am very proud of my heritage nowadays, but it is hard to accept when you're in a situation where you're the only dark kid in town.

you know, my exboyfriend was half Indian, the only non-white kid in the entire neighborhood who wasn't latino. when he was really little, he didn't care. but as he got older he realized his dad wasn't white. he went through a period where he hated and resented his dad for "being brown" and having a heavy accent. growing up a navy brat, enlisted, in long beach, ca, is a huge difference. it was like a town sized UN. but no matter what, no matter how long you grew up with kids of different races, played with them from birth, inevitably the kids split into their respective skin tone crowds when they got older and started dating. it was kinda hard seeing it slowly happen over time.
