Trump isn't even technically a right winger. He definitely isn't a conservative. He isn't even a politician... in fact, he knows less about politics than children in elementary school. But he knows his base, and because of that, it doesn't matter.

He doesn't actually believe in trickle down so much as he believes that he, his family and his friends are strong, powerful people who deserve to be richer, stronger and more powerful-- his base respects that. He doesn't actually believe in tougher immigration laws so much he believes in racism-- his base finds that refreshing. He doesn't believe in fair trade agreements so much as getting revenge and 'winning'-- his base desires that. He doesn't believe in gun rights, he just wants people to be afraid of the Democrats taking their freedoms away-- his base wants to hear that they are as persecuted as they feel, that Alex Jones was right, that the liberals truly are a different species.

Nothing he is saying and doing is coming from a rational, ideological place... it's coming from the mind of a spoiled, angry child who will do anything to get an emotional reaction. He has tapped into the dumbest, most dangerous aspects of conservatism-- something that is no longer political, that no longer even cares about basic human decency-- a sort of repressed barbarism, a desire to stop trying to be better, to simplify and stop thinking so much... and he doesn't have enough empathy, conscience or intelligence to comprehend the harm he is causing.
