"Give us our daily bread". Bread is ubiquitous, popular across the world due to it being so cheap, simple and adaptable. Easily prepared from baking dough that is essentially comprised of water, flour, and yeast. Of course it can contain other ingredients, giving us variety of different breads: Rye, Brown, Sourdough, Pumpernickel, and even Gluten-free for you unfortunate folks with a gluten sensitivity. I can't articulate enough, how important bread has been throughout human history. However that's not what I am here for. Rather, lets discuss Bread............................................the band. I have never heard of the band "Bread" before. A couple of weeks ago I purchased 200 loose CD's on Kijiji. A seller on Kijiji posted an ad for the CD's, I responded days later, asking if they were still available, they were. I asked how much, and the guy responded "just pick them up and they're yours". Over the past several days I have gone through them, sorting them from what interests me, and what does not. Today I got to one CD that is titled "The Best of Bread". I laughed and said to myself, "what is this silliness"? I put it in my CD player and was shocked to find out that I am at least somewhat familiar with half the songs here. Now I am not saying I like or dislike any of their music, some if it is interesting. I assume that my familiarity with the songs is because I heard it in perhaps movies or television. I just found it odd to know many of these songs, but have not heard of the band's name. Is it because they have such an unfortunate name? Yes I understand this band is well before my time, but there are many bands from that era I am familiar with. Anyways, this might be a silly topic, but I am curious as to others thoughts about this band. This must be a popular band with some of you old hippies
they were a bit soft for my tastes but you used to hear the hits on the radio back when everyone listened to radios.... I have a collection of vinyl I am selling...also about 200 ish...I think I saw a bread album in there... Audrey.....imo the bands name is a reference to the slang term for money used widely by us old hippies back in the day....''hey man...you got any bread to pitch in for weed?....we need 2 more dollars to make 15 and we can buy an ounce of the sinsy''
although now I see wiki saying they chose the name bread after being stuck in a traffic jam behind a bread truck...a wonderbread truck
Meh, it was just pop music, cheesy AM fare. Better than some from that era. I always liked that buttery wa-wa riff in guitar man.
I just can't help but giggle every time I hear the name. I can't imagine that situation being the inspiration for the name. Anyways, I added this CD to the pile I am going to give to Goodwill, if they accept loose CD's. Not really my kind of music. It's just interesting how I recognized several of their songs.
At one time they were really big on the pop charts. They did have a great mellow sound and I did like some of their music. Room for all types of music is not such a bad thing.
