That was a good read, thanks for the links. Is it possible we've got it wrong, and they've got more freedom than we're led to believe? That the average citizen enjoys basic civil rights, including the right to assemble and the right to question and criticize their government? It might behoove us to learn more about these people who will one day own our asses if we don't get our act together. With our national debt being dumped into bonds which are purchased by the Chinese, surely they stand to cash in. I'm told they're getting us to do their dirty work as international thugs in return, but is this really the case, or is it possible our leaders are selling off our future freedom, and the freedom of our children?
I condone any move to bring down Chinese Olympics. Even God would give Tibetans a strength that will destroy the olympic games brick by brick. I wait in anticipation. but I know that God is with the Tibetan fight. Infact, I hope that the olympics are obliterated into clouds of dust, that may choke those who have oppressed Tibetans and everyday Chinese people for too long. It is time for a rising. Time to rage against the machine, to engage in sheer rebellion. I know God won't abandon those who fight against the Beijing Olympics. Peace be with all.
I would hope in the future the IOC considers more completely their host countries, and if the Olympics are truly in the spirit of international unity, then they should make those decisions less on economics more on human rights.
Sorry but I think you people got it totally wrong. If you care so much about human rights in China then you should SUPPORT the Olympics. Nothing will be achieved by boycotting China, except that China will become more nationalist and pehaps even halt its opening up to the world. The opening of China in Deng Xiaoping's "Open Door Policy " last century is the most positive political move in the last few decades. Not only human rights and the economic situation of roughly 1/5 of the world's population improved significantly , but the opening of China has helped fuel other economies ,especially those of Africa. China's massive investment in Africa created more jobs and contributed much more to the economy then millions of dollars in donations from Western countries throughout the years. Let me just remind you that Tiananmen Square was 30 years ago , the Tibetan thing is took place 40 years ago (please look for maps of China in Qing and Yuan dynasty and tell me where is Tibet, you can use Western sources) - long before most of you were even born. Modern China is a changing country, it is opening up and constantly improving. It is far from perfect , but it is striving to do its best without ending up like Russia or India. If you want this positive change to continue - support the Olympics . You want China to curl back in and become a scarier version of Russia then go a head and boycott. The choice is yours
Did the economic situation improve for the 1.5 million people displaced, jailed or murdered to build the venue? And that didn't happen 30 to 40 years ago. But we should turn a blind eye to that? Who is providing the tools of war to those in Darfur that are murdering millions, that is also happening right now. But they are in your eyes a glowing example of the good that capitalism will bring to the world? Just out of curiosity what do you see wrong with India?
The Chinese government displaces millions of people every year, they move them to better modern houses. Have you ever lived in a house with no toilet and running water, 5 people per square meter? I used to live in HongKou district in Shanghai where most of the houses are that way. The people were moved to new areas in Pudong district where they have access to running water and toilets. I advise you to visit India where half of the people in New Delhi live in slums. We are not talking American style slums. We are talking about places with no running water and health services, the fact that the Chinese government displaces these people is great. Yes they move people to create huge gigantic projects , but most of them are aimed at creating better environment and services for the citizens. Here I have no argument with you. However this is not a unique Chinese policy. All powerful countries – U.S, Britain, Japan , Russia support these kinds of horrible regimes. I’m sure you can google examples. I can do that for you if you wish. This is a different issue. I support economic progress. You may not. But I don’t think its right for rich people in the West to prevent economic progress from emerging economies. You might think its not worth it , but the people of China, African and India want ipods, fast cars and health services. I have lived in both China and India . There is not doubt in my mind that in the past 10 years conditions have improved tremendously for the majority of the Chinese population while for India improvement has been slower. You ask what’ wrong with India? Let me give you an example , about 6 years when I was there , there was an earthquake in Gujarat – West India. Immediately it turned into chaos and the upper caste hindus started robbing and killing the dalits (“untouchables) . India’s governments reaction? They sent 20 doctors . To a place the size of France. India cannot feed , clothes and provide health services to most of its citizens. It is oppressing tons of different minorities and nationalities. Examples- look at the aborinies in Orrisa. Look at the people of North East India , like Ngaland and Manipur or Kashmir. All fighting for independence . Did I mention the fact that most Indians can’t read? That the police and fire prevention services are completely in effective. Do you know how long it takes to get a phone line in those places where they have phones? Or electricity. In comparison with India , China is heaven.
I think this link provides a different picture of what happened to the displaced. http://www.sundaymirror.co.uk/news/...ked-out-of-homes-for-olympics-98487-20321671/
I'm familiar with these kind of incidents, but these are small isolated cases , usually the result of an over-zealot local government (in this case the local Beijing municipality). The local governments in China are often corrupt and are the source of most of the horrible stuff coming from China. Its not the central government who I pledged my support to (Having said that, the central governments has its faults no doubt, but nothing in the magnitude of India/Russia)
No matter what anyone says these people in the west will never accept anything other than what has been told to them to believe as the truth, lets face it they are as brainwashed as the next guy, so there is a clash of cultures here, not ideologies. As i have said before this China and the olympics thing is just another distraction from issues like Iran, Iraq, and their own fucked up economies. So let the idiots have their fun playing holier than thou, but don't forget they will be in the middlle east for a very, very, long time well after the olympics are over, then we can have the last laugh. I suggest we boycott this bullshit site and all these hillbillies with it they are just a product of the Bush legacy which is hatred and suspicion of foreigners. And after the olympics if the west fucks it up, Tibet will have hell to pay. That is what they are doing. more harm than good. you are not Hippies because your hair is long or because you dope all the time, drugs are to control people, not help them, the man has you where he wants you.And don't forget it
Isolated? And Rick: Threats and blaming the other guy plus name calling really don't do your case much good.
I think your hostility against India has more to do with the exiled Tibetans living there than anything else.
I love India , but I think the government is crap. I will not boycott Indian products cause I know it will hurt the Indian people
The Indian people, the Chinese people, the US, it's all about the money. I'm all about everyone receiving health care, water, the basics, but let's share the cost of the resources, why not? So we had all these chinese guys posting, where the fuck are they now? I just wanna keep things honest and up front. As far as I'm concerned China sucks, but then, that's just me throwing out the dogma that everyone should be free to do whatever they want, China being fascist. I recently read about the new software they've got, which reads all the stuff on anyone's computer without a trace. We're Americans. We're fascists too. Read whatever you want on my computer (disregard the porn), all I care about is freedom.
I can live without Coca Cola can China live with out their money? I've read and have seen the film Being There. What exactly have you experienced in your life? Old film not new, not new to marketing. If this is what you are basing your crap on, better gear up, it's old news. I and my friends aren't tuning in or buying souvenirs. Hope the Chinese people buy lots of the crap. I am not.
