if i could make a million dollars and not be a corporate sell-out or be a millionaire by doing something good with my deeds then yeah, i would sign that dotted line. but as long as the outcome succeeded greatly more so than the income.
^^^ that's crap, harldy anybody amasses any wealth by only doing positive deeds. things like loyalty and ideals only enter into the discussion when you are well fed and your children are well fed. humans are self-involved, it's only natural, almost every creature seeks to ensure it's day to day survival. and in our society, money is that insurance. and what, exactly, is a corporate sell out?
someone who exploits themselves for being "self involved". and the keyword is: IF. if i could do so by giving back as good as i have it then i would, but if not, i prefer to stay on the average side.
Haha... that is a bunch of cracka assed rastafari shit. When I go to cities, I look for a guy with dreads selling perfume (well, there's one in Kensington if you go to Toronto). They usually have interesting other stuff to sell. Plus I'd rather support those guys than go to some whogivesashit chain store.
eh... me? I practice the way of RastafarIan life. I'm not necessarily a strict 'Rasta' (in the truest sense of the word... praising Selassie I and all that) but then again, I don't fully agree with any religion. I'd be glad to discuss this further, but this isn't an appropriate thread. Well, I've refused to take jobs before because they conflicted with my personal beliefs, I know it's two different things, but I doubt I would sign the dotted line that says: Destroy Bob Marley's message for a million dollars. Besides, you think Rita wasn't already a millionaire? How many records does Bob sell annually? She's a multimillionaire as the executor of his estate. Bob's record sales haven't had a substantial drop since his death.
i bought some patochouli oil from these jamaican's down in the french quarter in new orleans. they were some cool rastafarians. we had awesome conversations of all of their things.
i'm in total agreeance man i got a dogtag type necklace from my aunt for christmas with a pic of Bob Marley on it and the background is red gold and green (it's not supposed to be yellow, the actual color is gold) and i was pissed off that his image is used to get people to buy their shit i wear the necklace proudly because i understand what Bob Marley stood for, and what the colors of the Rasta represent. but when people see the necklace they think "check it out, it's Bob Marley, man he smoked alot of pot" and it's annoying because he wasn't a marijuana activist, he wasn't all about "smoke da herb, mon" he was about equality and freedom from exactly what companies are using his image for
I agree with the sentiments here but I'm not sure it's anything to get too worked up about. I mean, Bob Marley was a pretty amazing guy who did a lot of good for Jamacia. And, even if it is a distorted sterotype, americans who want to see Bob Marley's house and smoke Bob Marley's weed bring a lot of tourist dollars to the island, which it sorely needs. Maybe I'm just jaded, but commercalism really doesn't even bother me at this point. EVERYTHING is commercialized, from Ghandi to God, and we're all hypocrites in some sense or another because we all accept this as part of our world and, in small degrees at least, support it (or do none of you own computers?) For every stupid kid who buys this shit thinking that Bob Marley was all about smoking pot, or thinks that being a Rasta is all about ganja, there is another kid who will fall in love with the music or the ideas, and then go buy a shirt because he thinks Bob Marley kicks ass. And I don't have a problem with that. And yeah, Bob definitely wouldn't have loved seeing leather shoes with the rasta flag. But, he was a smart guy, and I'm sure he would understand how there's not really anything anyone can do about that kind of commercial crap, shake his head and move on. Far more ironic is how Che is used as a commercial interest, given that he would probobly rather have never lived than to see his face on a fucking thong or whatever.
Im not going to read this whole thread b/c my focus isnt there, so sorry if everyone has switch topics and this is random My ex was from St Croix. He grew up everymorning from the time he was really young listening to bob marley. I had always passed him over b/c due to misconception (and i will admitt i was an idiot), I thought it was "pot head music". After listening to it and hearing the real message and getting into the muic I love it, and can't believe i was ever such an idiot.
it's the same with Bob Marley rolling papers, they sell so many of them just because they have Bob's name on them, i buy them yes, but i don't buy them because they have Bob Marley on them, but because they're pure hemp and burn nicely, they could have a picture of saddam hussein for all i care, they're nice papers
I agree 100%. Same with all the Che merchandise. Leave that man rest in peace and don't make people who don't care about the original person, message or meaning rich by making Che or rastafari a product.
yes that is true, there are no boundaries here. we love everyone and all of their opinions, even if we don't always agree with them. but we still love them regardless. and we love you so post more, girl!
