I am amazed that no one has mentioned Alberta Hunter or Keb'mo. Alberta crossed the jazz (swing) and blues line and was comfortable in either genre. Keb'mo is more on the blues side but I'd bet he could light a fire. Oh yeah, anyone every hear of the family Marsalis?
Ellis and his family... I've met him. He's awesome... New Orleans jazz. Keb'mo is probably one of the best modern blues players... I love "Keep It Simple" and "One Friend"... He did an awesome folk/blues concert with the Indigo Girls.
I'm not much into blues, but here are some of my jazz favorites: Miles Davis Don Cherry Art Ensemble of Chicago Medeski, Martin & Wood Peter Brötzmann John Abercrombie Eric Dolphy Weather Report (especially the earlier stuff) pretty much anything with Jack DeJohnette on drums (except for the Keith Jarrett standards albums)
Keb'mo has been around (in widespread circulation) for, I'm guessing, ten+ years. Alberta Hunter started singing in the teens (as in 1912), had a forty+ year singing career, got out of the business, worked for twenty years as a nurse, got back to singing in her eighties, and has since passed on. If you want a great CD of hers, look for Amtrack Blues.
I'm saddened by not seeing Peter Green in this thread yet.. I'm going to throw in Magic Sam, Otis Rush & Johnny "Guitar" Watson into the mix too. :H
This group is a duo with a old/new school sound I was hook at a live show. They have so much spirit in their style. I felt Miles, Coltrane, Jimmy Smith,Cannonball, Blakley. The website is; www.jazzmatic.com.
