Orson Wells played the Shadow for the first year, but after his famous 1938 Halloween broadcast of War of the World’s, he became too well known and had to give it up.
I think if you look around your find old episodes of the Goon shows still being played your find them on line, may take a bit of understanding but went down big in the UK and was aired in the USA, this was alternative comedy of the 50's and 60's in the UK.
I sat in Grammas brand new '49 Ford and listened to Gospels from LA at night. Sounded like rock 'n Roll---before R& R. But a lot of rock and roll has its roots in gospel, even Elvis sang gospel I think your find I'm right.
I had a dear friend from England who came to live here but has long since died. He was always. saying he loved the Goon Show.
Yes well The Goons was Spike Milligan, Harry Secombe and Peter Sellers there was a forth Michael Bentine he was in the early shows, but where ever they was working they would all be there for the Sunday show at a pub in Soho Londan, they would work on the scripts written by Spike during the week and was ready to do a live show later the same day, and went back to where they was working in England, Scotland or Wales. Your find the Goon shows on line live, its nice if you can find them performing the shows live.
The Goon show was the then Satirical 'alternative and was for the time, very 'political' - I loved it too !!!
For those who know of it, it was fantastic and all done live, Spike was the mainstay of it, you need to read his war memoirs, its all in the first one ,Adolf Hitler. My part in his downfall, its a book that has me doubled up in laughter every time I read it. Boy its been read a few times and the rest of them, once I start I cant put them down.
Loved Don Lee. Vogel He always referred jokingly to himself as the fat blind guy. (Blind since his birth) He was my WISN am1130 morning show idol and kickstarter of laughter for me during the workweek. My favorite segment was always the hour of the bizarre on Friday's where anything would go having calls come in with long time listeners. What a way to start the weekend with your abs hurting with laughter. He passed away in 1995 from cancer He was only 49 years old

Would that be Spike Milligan? He mentioned that name often also. I am old but he was a young teen when I was born.
Yes that would be him he had a great sense of humour that you had to understand, try reading his books, that way your understand him, but he was a troubled man I think he was a manic depressant and more, who would lock himself in his office where he worked writing jokes for other comedian Eric Sykes I think it was called the fun factory, Eric was a great guy ended being deaf but still worked, there secretary is also become a producer of shows for radio and TV, see how it rubs off. All one big happy family.
My friend was a manic depressive also Bipolar. Didn't have that term yet then People just thought he was a little mad. I'll read I mean listen to the book .
BoozerC Thanks for putting the links for the old time radio shows!! There were so many that I listened to that I had forgotten! Kingfish to Amos= "you ain't got enough sense to come in outta' the rain!" Amos= "I does too! I'se done it lotsa times!!" The lawyer on that show, Calhoun ,was hilarious too. I guess those old shows are now looked on as racist , but they were funny.
Thank you scratch for your kind words. To tell you the truth I just did a Google using the title of this thread, and I was surprised just how many different links there are on this subject. I have been filling my boots with some of the programs and stations. A virtual treasure trove of long distant past radio treasures!
Here's a real 'bblast from the past' - the BBC 'light' Programme - forerunner of BBC Radio 2. Radio Rewind - BBC Radio 1 People - Jack Jackson - Splicing It
