Blackhat Movie Blurb by Shale January 18, 2015 OK, this looked like a timely action flick about international computer hackers and starred Chris Hemsworth. So right out of the gate let me tell you that only 32% of the aggregate critics at Rotten Tomatoes gave this movie a fresh and the same percentage of audiences liked it. Their collective criticism: "Thematically timely but dramatically inert, Blackhat strands Chris Hemsworth in a muddled misfire from director Michael Mann." I have to agree with the muddled mess. I thot it was my not being a computer geek why I could hardly keep up with some of the rapid disconnected scene shifts. The movie opens with some CGI going inside the workings of a computer, I suppose all the way down to those microscopic silicon diodes or whatever. Good illustration of the micro workings that caused a nuclear reactor in Hong Kong to overheat and explode. It was discovered that a computer hacker caused the malfunction and there was similar attack in the U.S. that was foiled by our superior safeguards (sarcasm). Also, the stock exchange is being hacked by the same RAT (Remote Access Tool). The Chinese Computer Security Agent, Chen Dawai (Leehom Wang) says the only person who can identify the hacker is a convicted hacker in U.S. custody, Nick Hathaway (Hemsworth). So, the Chinese and the U.S. will be working together on this case and Nick is released on furlough to FBI agent Carol Barrett (Viola Davis) and another agent. However Nick forces them to commute his sentence before he agrees to work for them. Nick Given an Offer He Could Refuse So the team starts chasing down the source of the hack with Nick and Agent Dawai (who trained at MIT) with the help of Dawai's sister Lien (Wei Tang). Hacker Nick at Work There are some mean, Eastern European gangsters with tattoos helping the hacker, so there is mayhem and murder and a few chases. Oh, did I mention that Nick and Lien work close chasing the cyber crook and end up in bed? (Well, it is Chris Hemsworth after all - who wouldn't end up in bed with him). Nick & Lien on the Run Things get hectic and violent real quick and Nick and Lien end up on their own fighting the bad guys by arranging meetings. With few resources, except for money they manage to hack, Nick (who has proven his ability to take down 3 bad guys in a fight in a restaurant) is designing makeshift armor and weapons for some hand to hand with guys who are coming to a knife fight with guns. (Hey, it is Chris Hemsworth after all). Nick Girding for Battle Well, it wasn't the best action movie but I did enjoy it after the action started. And like all the critics mentioned, somehow the stranded Chris Hemsworth held it together.
