    I disagree.

I mean, I haven't seen the video yet. But them being for or against him is HIGHLY relevant.

*edit* of course it's not okay either way, but exactly HOW not okay it is is highly dependent on if they're just stupid or if they're actually venomous.

I know, thats why I'm having trouble comprehending why they went there. Everything else can be discounted as ignorance. Racism based on ignorance is just as dangerous but not quite as scary as racism based on hatred.

Everything else can be written off as some spoiled and extremely silly white boys taking a joke overboard. The monkey takes it to another level.

Why is that so highly relevant? If a behavior is complete BS, the motivation is hardly more than a lame excuse.

I have never understood why something like blackface is so offensive, I mean, I understand the historical reasons behind it being offensive, but what I don't understand is the offensiveness in doing it today exactly. Like for an acting class at school, or for improv skits in public.

Granted, I know this shindig was stupid and I disagree they should be chanting the way they are, I don't think there is anything *wrong* with a white person dressing in costume as a black person.

I do think what they did was extremely offensive, however, I do believe that people go way too far with being offended these days. Everything is offensive.

It doesn't give a reason why they did that in the video? Just as a prank? Who is the prank toward?

There isn't? What about if a person taped the skin near his eyes back and did "Asian-face"? What about if they donned a prosthetic nose and did "Jew-face"? It's offensive, period. Why would anyone need to use blackface for an improv skit or acting class? Under what POSSIBLE reason could they need to do that? The only reason I could think of is if they were instructed to "act black", and if you think that there's any such thing as that, you are a racist.

They were "showing support" for the athlete, which is bullshit. It was racism disguised as humour. Also, the part of the article that says that Quebecois aren't aware of the historical significance of blackface is incorrect. My stepfather has lived here all his life, and he says that French Canadians are well aware of it.

The old offense game takes two to play, an offender and an offended. If one of them refuses to play, it's game over. That is as far as stupid pranks go.

Aside from the fact that it was real stupid and bad taste, I don't understand how everybody in a 1000 mile radius can be instantly offended.

    What if?
You still haven't said what's offensive about it, you've only said that it is.

I wouldn't be offended if someone put on a big nose or dark makeup around their eyes to look Polish. Nor would I be offended if people got shitfaced to act Pittsburgh =P

    I agree completely.

I don't really ever get offended. I mean, look at Jersey Shore...they put Italian's to shame. Do I get offended being Italian? No. Or look at how Family Guy bashes the Irish. Do I get offended when they do it? No.

Racism exists because people let it exist. Because people overreact and allow themselves to get tangled up in the feeling of "well, I know this shouldn't be right, so I'm going to get upset over it."

I'm personally not all that aware of the offensiveness of Blackface, being a French-Canadian. It's historically been more of an American taboo.

But to answer your questions, some people may want to dress up as Bob Marley, Michael Jordan or Nelson Mandela for Halloween or for a class or a performance club. What's wrong about putting makeup on your skin? Nothing. How you protray yourself in makeup can be offensive, but the act itself isn't *wrong*.

Didn't Eddie Murphy put on whiteface for a Hollywood film? Remember when Robin Williams did Mrs. Doubtfire as a woman?

Expressive art forms that are avant-garde in nature aren't entirely RACIST. Not saying these students were acting appropriately, but blanket statements like "blackface should be immoral and banned" is a little harsh.
