I like a lot of the films mentioned. A few that weren’t: Pride of the Yankees Bridges at Toko Ri (although they’ve colorized it now) The Best Years of Our Lives Every night when I get into bed, I turn on Turner Classic Movies, pick a black & white, set the timer and fall asleep. Can’t be color bc it’s too distracting.
Oh, so many. All those mentioned and The Man Who Came to Dinner, On Borrowed Time, Philadelphia Story, The Marx Brothers movies, WC Fields ,-----I have a collection of video tapes,( probably 500) many of which are from the 30s, 40s. I saw so many of those old black and whites in the 40s for 12 cents a showing at my little hometown theater.
Just watched an old black & white Elvis movie. King Creole on Silver Screen TV Channel. Just happened on it and my wife and I had good time watching it and hearing songs we hadn’t heard in decades.
Mizoguchi is my fave b&w filmmaker. Sansho the Bailiff, Life of Ohara, Ugetsu (below). He did things with b&w that colors can never touch...
