Any black and white film directed by John Ford. (I especially like the last scene of "My Darling Clementine" where the lady is watching Henry Fonda right down the road in a vast vast vast open prarie with mesas... "The Grapes of Wrath is another great one. Finally, "The Man That Shot Liberty Valance" 1962... Ford's last great film. Murder My Sweet--old Dick Powell version of Raymond Chandler. Full of dark shadows and menace without gore.
Arsenic and Old Lace! And I LOVE Cary Grant! Must admit, though, I haven't seen many other old b/w classics. Not even Cassablanca. Must put that on the list and see it soon... Can anyone recommend something for me? Recently got the Blockbuster version of netflix and it would be cool to mix some old classics into the mix!
What about Hud? A modern western staring Paul Newman.Instead of driving into town in a horse&buggy they drive a Cadillac.

"It's a Wonderful Life". A Christmas eve tradition in Our House. John Ford's Stagecoach w/ John Wayne. Another John Ford great----The Grapes of Wrath And you can't forget 1948's Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein
I'm surprised "The African Queen" hasn't been mentioned. I love the way Bogart and Hepburn interact in the film. Humphry was one of those actors that you saw the character in the role and not the actor.
That's slightly different because it was a period piece and filmed in B&W for full effect. The same reason Martin Scorsese chose to film the Raging Bull in black and white to take you back to a time and place.
Oops, I got so caught up in old classic movies I forgot what the question was about. It was Katherines first color film and Humphry's one and only Oscar performance though.
