    And yes....

    I wear Birkenstocks, they're all I wear.

I am NOT a yuppie by any means. I wear them (when I have to wear shoes) because they are comfortable.

It varies from person to person. I love my Birks, (and I call 'em that!) and I'm no yuppie....I have plantar fascitis in my left heel (and a small bone spur), and Birkenstocks and Chacos are about all I can wear comfortably. I used to go barefoot a lot, but (because of the foot trouble) even THINKING about going barefoot for a long period hurts. I have trouble wearing full shoes for a long period too, for the same reason. The Birks were expensive, but, with periodic re-soling, previous pairs have lasted me 10 yrs... Prob. the cheaper Birks would be good too...and finding a pair of abandoned sandals would be the best! But, I've never been so lucky...

Hey quit name calling. You guys were not there ...I was there in Los Angeles ..at UCLA ..when I bought my first pair of Birkenstocks. I still have the original. Purchased in 1966 ...I was 20 yrs old at that time ...and in the middle of the hippie movement. They were NOT expensive then ..It was the fame and snubists who gave fame to the sandals ..and then price went up. But they are the best!!!
Its loke anything else, the grass root movement discovered the best "surfing" beaches ..then Marriott, Hyatt, Intercontiental, Four Seasons come in later and ruin the places!!! "This is the same"!!!! So if you need a bit of protection for your soles then the Birks are the answer. Very natural ..its a shame that the are so pricey today as a product of modern mass merchandising.

if you have to wear shoes, go for Chacos. I've seen the factory floor and those are good people to support.
plus my pair 1 is almost seven years old with one resole!

I got a pair of Birkenstock sandals as a gift, and a pair of clogs, and they are super comfortable. Never before have I walked around town (in Florida on vaction) for 10 hours and not had sore feet.

The other thing about them is durability - I know someone who has had their pair for 20 plus years, and the only thing thats starting to happen is the cloth covering (where your foot touches the footboard) is coming up around the toes. And you could just put some glue in there and it would be good as new.

The clogs I have, I payed for because at the time I had a job but no car or liscence, which meant that I wasn't paying car insurance or gas. I also wasn't spending money on much else, so pretty much everything I earned went into the bank.

I would go barefoot, but my mom hates it when I come home with black feet and get the floors are dirty. And there have been a few times I got really painful burn blisters on the balls of my feet after spending a day outside on hot pavement, and I can't not pop blisters.

However, it is my opinion that frissbee must be played barefoot.

Yes! I also have a pair of Chacos Z2 Colorado Nomads. I use them for wet environments. Rafting, beach, etc. The Birks are for dry environment.

I think they're comfy regardless of the "status quo" or stereotype.
