Thank God I don't live in the U.S. I live in a real first world country. It's rare that someone gets that nasty, but at least I know I could stand up for myself if it came to it. I'm not saying there's any conscious intent as such. But that it's ignorant, and such behaviour, although intended to be polite, makes the assumption that you are smaller and less independent. That spells it out.
In fairness, there are times when people are rude in disguise. Like if someone says "thank you", but the same way that they would say "fuck you". It's also easy to think that someone is playing games with you even if they aren't. I guess we can't really know.
