wanna bet ? hehe i parked at the old wooden bridge today for about an hour and counted 27 bikes i think,,but cant be sure on how many were on there way back and had already been tallied, i was paying more attention to the canal then the people im afraid
As I work on the UC Davis campus, I could have counted over 2,000 bikes before noon. Widespread use of bikes requires a serious commitment to infrastructure. Bike lanes and racks are two that spring to mind.
you lucky duck. yeah davis is supposed to be the bicycle capital of the usa. i've looked into moving there, but i just can't afford it.
It's just trying to convince the pursehandlers that bike lanes are a worthy expenditure. Maybe with the rising cost of fuel, more people will be willing to give it a shot. Seems there's an invisible line of reputation in deciding to ride a bike (i.e. oh no, I'm not driving a car, I must be 'less than') for the average non-bike person, so the more people they see on bikes, perhaps the more acceptable it will be to their ideals. Look at the Netherlands.
If there are enough bicyclists that there are traffic problems, the powers that be would be open to the solution of a bike lane. The problem need not be a big bloody accident. Bike lanes can be pretty inexpencive to install. A line on the pavement plus "Bike Lane" signs. The distance from the curb should be one car width (for parked cars) plus one bike. This can be narrowed at intersections. The city manager in Davis CA is probably used to inquirys from other cities, if you want those kind of details. Bike parking can be left to local merchants at the start. It is better for a buisness to have its customers park in racks than clutter the door with thier bikes. If....if....if.... there are enough bicyclists.
i feel like i'm the smartest person alive!! .. okay maybe not exactly.. but i feel like a moron when i'm driving a car (when i borrow one) and i see someone riding a bike. maybe i just like when someone says "gee wizz i wish i could do that. bet you're in great shape." just get on your bike and ride it
yeah, thats a big if, brother. I think it's gonna take much higher gas prices for anyone to REALLY commit to biking. Now, they're driving (a little) less, buying hybrids or at least smaller cars. People are still really lazy. The fact that about half of all car trips are under 2 miles should tell you that. Even in sprawling America, that's easily bikable distance.
Oh man, i love riding my bike. Unfortunately it would take me about an hour to get anywhere in my sprawlingly laid out town by bike. Nothing is close to my house with the exception of a gas station...oh the irony. lol
i forgot to count.. im a moron, i 'll try and remember tomorrow my town has good bike access. theres a rack on every bus (but it only holds 2), and bike lanes on just about every major thoroughfare. its sweet, actually. I see a lot of business types on bikes here. but really, its probably one or two percent of the pop that use them regularly. 2000 people in a 100 000 person city.. that could be right. if it was 10 percent, that would be something. In two years, ive only been stiffed once for a spot on the bus bike rack .. weve also got awesome mtn biking everywhere around us, so that probably has a big influence. Which reminds me - i see just as many bikes riding around on the tops of cars as i do in the street .
I just looked and St. Paul has 75 miles of bike trails and lanes, and the mayor wants to build it up to 120 miles. Across the Mississippi in Minneapolis they'res a couple hundred miles anyway. I was just looking at a site called Pedaling.com that has all kinds of bike stuff like maps for all over and I got off onto another site called Adventure Bicycling that has a area for people looking to ride across country and different parts of the world like from Alaska to Peru. Theres even some folks in there 60s and 70s talking about riding from coast to coast, kind of inspiring I think. I saw 6 bikes on the road today too, its been rainy all day here.
blu raven, I just discovered the river road on the south side of the Mississippi across from St Paul up to Lilydale, what a beautiful bike ride that would be. It goes past the yacht clubs and you're right down by the River, so gorgeous with the fall colors out. I've driven it the last 2 days and seen lots of bike riders there. the Twin Cities do have a lot of nice bike trails.
this "lovely lady" today told me i was "retarded" for riding my bicycle barefoot. "whenever i see you riding your bike barefoot, i tell my grandbabies.. that lady is retarded!" nice i laughed
Did she mean that seriously, or was she just being funny? Cuz I'd have been pissed if someone said that to me and meant it.
she's uumm.. how do i put it nicely.. one of those people that nothing ever brings them joy. grouchy lady, always yelling at her "grandbabies" to hurry up, to get in the car, etc etc.. thats why i laughed. probably would do her some good to ride a bicycle barefoot.
Yeah I have a lady like that down the road... She always bitches about everything... When I skate in the street she tells me not to put wax on the road cuz it'll cause a car crash, not to grind on the curbs, not to skate on the sidewalk, not to skate on anyone's property, etc. She's a real beeitch. I remember she hit me once when I put my backpack on her bushes so that I could tie my shoe up... But I think that time was really funny cuz she came out of nowhere.
Hell yeah there definitely up there in the top list anyways.... Most people say tv don't they? Whats that about like....
Not only do I ride bikes, I ride real nice recumbent bikes, and we have a recumbent bike shop and sell them, and I can tell you from first-hand experience that bikeriding is a GROWING market, but it was also a growing market long before the price of gas started booming upwards of $3 a gallon.
