True..... It must have hit him all of the sudden. I have this experience of not needing to go one minute and urgently having to go the next on many different occasions. The transition from one to the other can be abrupt. Or, maybe he'd actually been holding it for a really long time already, in which case he probably just couldn't hold it in any longer.
