Today, I felt like watching a romantic movie and noticed this one opening. When I saw the movie poster, I thot it would be about an interracial love affair between two disparate ppl sort of like The Bodyguard. But alas, I was Halle Berry'd. Seems the white woman embracing the black man, tho very lite is biracial. However, there is an interracial element to this movie.

The movie opens in London, where a frantic white woman, Macy Jean (Minnie Driver) is trying to get her biracial daughter Noni's (India Jean-Jacques) hair done the nite before a talent contest. Seems she can't do anything with it and a very accommodating black hairdresser saves the day.

This is background of the dynamic that shaped this aspiring young performer and her relationship with her stage mother, whom we soon learn is a pushy, single-minded bitch.

Noni Jean grows up (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) and is gaining fame working with her BF rapper, Kid Culprit (Machine Gun Kelly) and her mama manager is about to get her a recording deal of her own. At this point the very pushed young woman is living her mother's desires and doing her sleazy performances rather than creating the music she has inside her.

There is a cop, Kaz Nicol (Nate Parker) assigned to guard her hotel room when he hears the mother scream and goes in to find Noni sitting on the 8th floor balcony about to jump. Of course, he manages to save her (He's the black guy on the poster pic). Since The Enquirer saw her dangling from the balcony everyone suspects attempted suicide but she says at a press conference that she was drunk and slipped - to which Nate, a very honest cop just relates how he caught her and saved her.

Well, this is a formulaic romantic drama and this is the disparate setup. Kaz and his father, Captain David Nicol (Danny Glover) have a plan for him to rise in the PD, then get into politics to make a difference. (Yeah, there's a glimpse of an Obama book in the scenery). However, Kaz and Noni are drawn to each other and a romance ensues.

Will the good, stable cop and the famous but troubled pop star be able to find happiness together? Well, make assumptions or go see the movie if you really want to know. I liked the move as did 85% of the aggregate reviewers and 80% of audiences.
