I must like a few - (+ never knew!) e.g. The Searchers - Tombstone - Young Guns(i,ii) Once upon a time in the West - The Wild Bunch The Magnificant 7 + "Clint"s
As much as I love the old-time classics, "3:10 to Yuma" with Russell Crowe was the western that impressed me the most. A perfect adult story perfectly told.
What about Willie nelsons movie Barbrarosa, he and Gary busick are poncho and lefty. It is from the 80's but i really like it.
I love Westerns too. John Wayne is my favorite, even though I don't agree with his personal politics... The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance may be my favorite.
My favorite is actually a mini series... Lonesome Dove. When I was a kid, Gene Autry, though, was my hero.
Eastwood is good but John Wayne was the king. I'm suprised no one has mentioned Quigley or Tombstone.
Tombstone is mentioned in ths thread . Great movie, by the way. I think Eastwood rules more then Wayne in the westerngenre. His roles are more realistic. I'm not into the hero/saviour thing at all. I also really dig Lee van Cleef and William Berger (Charlie Siringo!). I hope there are more movies like the new 3:10 to Yuma coming! Excellent western
yup, Tombstone was totally mentioned.....that's my favorite! gotta love val kilmer. his best role imo. "I have not yet begun to defile myself"
I’d have to say the best cowboys were: 1) Gary Cooper 2) Clark Gable 3) Henry Fonda 4) Robert Duvall 5) Clint Eastwood 6) Steve McQueen The best movies being: 1) High Noon - Gary Cooper 2) Unforgiven – Clint Eastwood 3) The Misfits - Clark Gable 4) The Oxbow Incident - Henry Fonda 4) Dances with Wolves – Kevin Costner 5) Little Big Man – Dustin Hoffman 6) Stagecoach – John Wayne I personally believe that The Quiet Man was John Wayne’s best movie but it wasn’t a cowboy movie.
Hud has not been mentioned here.I suppose you could call it a modern western in that they would drive into town in a Cadillac instead of a horse & buggy.
the good the bad and the ugly, high noon, the shootist, hang em high made me feel i was reading a very good western book as i watched the movie.
i wanna give a nod to turn of the century film"the great train robbery"i believe it was made by the edison company and filmed in new jersey.it's available on you tube and other sites...........another great western "the magnifecent seven" i think that was based on the japenese film "seven samurai"
