Pffft. Lars is my favourite drummer but he's not better than Dave.

I don't know why people think he's the best thing ever... He was never supposed to be a great drummer. He was just supposed to get to get drunk and play along.

Don't bring my age into this man. I've listened to Metallica as long as I've listened to music, I've learned how to play almost every song of theirs note for note... Hell I have a god damn Metallica shrine in my room. Don't try to tell me what I don't know. ;)

Lars was never a great drummer. Hell he only learned how to play 4 years before he joined the band... Even then listen to Kill Em All, those are basic drums man. They sound cool as fuck, so much energy and stuff but it's basic as hell.

It's kind of funny actually how you say AJFA is his best work because the drums on that album are almost all tooled with. Looks like your the one who needs to learn some shit.... Old man.

Sorry to quote you twice but I have something else to say.

Do you play the drums? Because if you do the answer is VERY VERY easy to who the better drummer is.

Captain Cannabis, seein' as how you're a drummer an' all, you should be, better than most, able to provide an analysis of why some drummer sucks, by like say, posting a sound clip and then describing said suckyness in a more concise way.

You could say something like "listen at bar 12 , he' slammin' out 16ths on the doubles and then on the 1 of bar 13 he goes for a blastbeat and blows it, hit it late.." or some shit.

    That would be interesting ...;)

Ok. You raise a good point. I'll post some clips showing why Dave is much better than Lars.

    New Metallica: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdMuEL3EzVM

    New Slayer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7J11s-hXrew

That's some new stuff from both bands. Dave completely blows Lars away on this... Hell, it sounds like Lars' double bass is a god damn computer. So does Dave's in some parts but at least his sounds believable.

Remember guys, I like Lars more. I can just accept the fact that he's clearly miles below Dave talent wise... Like their seriously not even comparable haha.

    Another example.

    Early 90's Metallica: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfukfbfjIL4

    Early 90's Slayer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2e47wBWTV8

Sad But True is one of my favourite songs... But like all songs on the Black Album it's easy as fuck.. Like one armed easy. War Ensemble is a cool song.. Technically blows anything on the Black album away... Not that Dave is some master drummer, he's just a good metal one.

    Example 3.

Metallica in their golden days: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUQz_eTe4kg

Slayer in their golden days: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmTcgTLy_Ns

That's my 4th favourite Metallica song and pretty good Slayer song. They're both fucking sick, no need to make these ones compete. I love both bands.. I just wanted to listen to them :D

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TD-_FM8_d9c Lars is awesome!

Lars also hasn't hit a ride cymbal since load.... Or Reload.... Can't remember which one.

But he's only used the ride on like 10 songs.... I don't know why he uses it so little.. I don't think he even brings on when he plays live. Maybe he does now, but he didn't a couple years back.

I'm going to see them in Toronto on Monday. I really hope Lars has a good night. My dad is takin' me and a couple buddies. Were gonna get drunk and stoned as fuck. It's gonna be a night to remember..... God I hope they play For Whom The Bell Tolls :D

AJFA destroys anything Dave has EVER written...........

Metallica sold out and lost their mojo.
Slayer has kept their sound.....same shit every album..

I think my favorite metal drummer is Christian Nyquist from Lost Horizon. His drumming isn't the most difficult or technical but that's hardly how I think a musician should be judged. His drumming is interpretive and alive and is perfectly tailored to the music, which is very unique melodically and structurally and I've always been stunned with how seamlessly the drums are integrated and interwoven with the music.

That or Meshuggah for obvious reasons https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qc98u-eGzlc

There are many outstanding drummers out there. I don't think I could ever single out ONE drummer as THE best, because I don't believe in the best being just one.

Having said that, I'm a bit surprised no one has mentioned the names Mike Portnoy or Vinnie Paul.

No you don't get it..... Sure AJFA was his best work. It obviously was.

But in the grand scheme of things it's not that hard to play. All of those double bass triplets are just copy and pasted and so are the longer double bass secions (Dyers Eve for example).

Lars is not a technically good drummer. The only people that think Lars Ulrich is a fantastic drummer are fanboys and 13 year old fans who only know Master of Puppets.

I spat out a bit of coffee reading that, lol.

Any best would be arguable but my favorite is Scott Travis who's been playing for Judas Priest since Painkiller. Dude could literally twirl his sticks any which way in his sleep and still not miss a beat.
