Because I notice there's already an "of all time" thread. By "contemporary" I mean still actively producing studio albums and touring, at their peak rather than past their prime. I don't listen to a great deal of metal, hoping this thread will give me some recommendations, especially for bands I could concievably see doing their thing on stage still.
You won't go wrong by seeing an Amon Amarth gig either. They're my most seen band other than local friends stuff. And they just get better and better.
jesus christ that was horrible, lol. i just looked them up. instrumentals were fantastic but i can't stand that type of constant screaming.
It's growling though? Screaming black metal, death metal is growling. Plus that's how a Viking band should sound with a lead singer that looks like he does. You don't want some prancy high pitches vocalsmlike Hammerfall or Judas Priest or them whacky sacky bands. You need the grunt. The roar! The anger! Which song did you listen to anyway? =p
It doesn't help that I didn't understand a single word other than "Deceiver of the Gods" at the end. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpAcxbtXUgQ
Victorious March unk: Ten marching feet walk the blood soaked ground! My girls fav. Is - Where Silent Gods Stand Guard. unk: I don't know I mean I liked the raw sound of early but I really think they found their sound these past few albums.
Aye, Amon amarth vocals pretty much stand on the cusp of what I can enjoy- they sound brutal but you can still understand the lyrics. And there are still melodies and sick instrumental stuff going on behind. I'd love to see 'em live. I'm also rather fond of Kvelertak. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7sIqyoRFiU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eelfbl1ZLrE
You are probably going to have to name a year, after which you definition of contempory passes. I have recently gotten into Bodycounts 2014 album Manslaughter, which was certainly a return to form, checks all those boxes you listed, as technically it charted better than their first 1991 success Even though Ice T is almost bloody 60, another album also out this year. Ill say Bodycount in this thread, becuase thats what Ive been listening too the last two weeks. Ice Ts real first name is Tracy.....lolz
Well, If a band are still regularly producing albums that are considered among their best work, and regularly playing shows with new material, rather than touring and just playing their greatest hits, I don't really mind when they started out. It's not as broad a category as it seems at first. Few bands keep coming up with stellar stuff after 20+ years. Most seem to have about 5 good albums in them, on average, which isn't unimpressive.
There isnt a more appropriate name for an album in the history of metal IMO, It came out in '98, they were Obsolete in '98
Here's my 2 cents. These bands are among my favorites and fav songs. (Epica, OM, Sleep, Tool) Especially if you actually listen to lyrics and not just the music. Something I never understood, sdo many people say they just listen to the music and not words. Jesus Christ, that's like looking at art exclusively in black and white, you're not getting the whole thing.
