Although the earliest recorded use of the word "stout" to describe a beer came in 1677, stout as its own commercial beer style was not established until around 1820. Before then, stout and porter were the same style of beer. Stout is simply an archaic term meaning "strong" and was used to refer to a high alcohol version of porter called "stout porter."
Although in our recipes we tend to keep the alcohol level a bit on the lower side, so we can drink and enjoy more.

Beer has long been the base of many medicinal formulations and stout is perhaps the most widely touted beer for being good for you. Guinness took great advantage of this, marketing their beer with a variety of slogans including “Guinness is Good for You” to “My Goodness, My Guinness.” Guinness has actually been used in hospitals and even given to nursing mothers. In some countries, stout is believed to be an aphrodisiac. Of course this can have two opposite effects: one desirable and the other disabling. Furthermore, the rumor that Guinness is rich in vitamin G may not be entirely truthful. There is no vitamin G. But if you feel good after drinking it, then you might try the following prescription: take orally 3 pints daily. Some believe this to be their Recommended Daily Allowance.

I call it stout but to me its lumped in with beer although like the term beef can be used for the cheapest hamburger to the prime rib.
If you have the taste for stout, regular beer will never be the same for you, it is like drinking water to me, yeah it will give you a buzz but true stout drinkers are not in it just for a buzz.

I really enjoy trying different recipes and adding molasses, coffee and chocolate and oats to achive different complex flavors and after taste. Also growing our own hops is rather cool.
Stout is different than any american beer but I do lump it in... as it is not a wine or spirit.

So in my book...STOUT RULES !!!!

Yeah they reckon a pint or two of guinness a day is good for you, but try drinking ten pints plus of a friday night and you don't wake up thinking Guinness is good for you believe me!!

BUT!!! Larry just bought us 2 new 6 gallon glass carboys...so brewing time is near.
I hate buying it when you can make your own...

And I agree with seamonster...a stout would be good right about NOW!

HAHA...yeah thats why Larry likes to brew a bit on the lighter side, when we have a serious night of drinking we tend to stay up till 3 or 4 and do some guitar playing and singing and make a night of it..so we can drink all night without getting too sloshed too soon.
But of course we always are by 4 in the morning.
    Drunk and singing REAL LOUD.....

haha...thats what we use for secondary...2 liter soda bottles.
They are made to hold carbonation.
We brew in the carboys then when the yeast is done we rebottle into the 2 liters then in 3-6 weeks we bottle into 16 oz. screw cap soda bottles.
But I have a bid in on an old cast iron bottler on e-bay and since we have been buying black and tan and the occasional oatmeal stout we have a nice collection of brown bottles (never use clear).
So when he gets laid off we will brew and put it into real bottles and maybe I'll even design a label..lol

I don't drink beer when I'm in the US,when I'm in England I drink it almost every day.Why is that? :)Authentic lagers that you get in England or for that matter some other countries in Europe is so much better, really NO comparison.
