James Jamerson is the best bassist.

    That's motown.

We all have our own opinions on who the best bassest in the world is and soon enough theres guna be an arguement (im predicting). Anyone who plays the bass for any respective band deserves some kind of merit for making it that far in a world full of harsh music critics. Allthough sometimes its very bloody obvious that one bassist is a hell of alot better than another, you still gota acknowledge the others.

Anyway....IMO I think Cliff Burton, Jason Newstead really deserve some credit, the guy from primus(not quite sure on that one but i know his bass playing is Mad!), um the bassist from Sublime, Flea is oh so good too and deserves credit also, um who else........but out of all bassists mentioned id have to pick Jason Newstead as my favorite[IMG].

I'll chime in with Les Claypool. And Krist Novelselic is nothing special as a bass player in my opinion.

Les Claypool is the most overrated bass player evah. He's good and has his own thing going on but best ever please.

Check out Jaco Pastorius probably the best ever.

But my personal favorite's gonna have to be PHIL

Technical ability has no bearing on pop music, so people listing their favourites is absolutely right. Some technically great players have probably contributed very little to popular music.

    PAUL McCARTNEY
    ANDY ROURKE (THE SMITHS)
    PHIL LYNOT

All of which play with what they feel rather than trying to knock us out with technical brilliance that would be lost on most listeners.

He may not be the best, but I love love love Mike. In addition to being a great bassist, he's a great songwriter.

I was just posting about this on another thread. You have all put down some good ones, so I am not going to repeat. But Aston "Familyman" Barrett, literally the backbone and bassist for Bob Marley and the Wailers, Burning Spear, and many others including: the Tennors, Glen Brown, Johnny Clarke, Alpha Blondy, Joe Higgs, Big Youth, Yabby You, Junior Byles, Jacob Miller, Justin Hinds, Israel Vibration, etc. is fuckin' incredible.

In reggae, bass is the music. Familyman created it all!

why do people list rock bassists? more often than not, they're crap.
the best ones are funk bassists. i can't really name any right now, but they are the best. flea is one of the best. there's some really intricate stuff involved in funk, and also in most jazz

now a few people have put this kind of answer and i ask...
since when did hendrix or clapton play BASS guitar? i won't argue about who the best guitarists are right now, but at least put bassists here...
