Seriously, I cant believe so many hipforumers can be so unknowing. Obviously personal prefrence is a matter of opinion, but as far as technical ability is concerned (which Id imagine is the only way to detmine the "best", rather than "favorite") most replies were absurd. Claypool is good and few hit on that, but only one mention of Victor Wooten???? Johnny Myung as well. Only a few Jaco mentions... I mean I love sublime... but come on guys....

    I'm surprised nobody mentioned:
    Roger Waters (Pink Floyd)
    Holger Czukai (Can)
    Stanley Clarke (Return to Forever)
    John Wetton (King Crimson)

I Also just watched cliff em all, not only could he shred better then most lead guitarists but he was a funny, laid back motherfucker.

Too bad we have to talk about him in the past tense.

In terms of musical skill rather than just tedious funking, the bassist from the Dismemberment Plan pisses on you all from a great height.

If there's one thing I hate, it's Message Board Pretension, as so evidently displayed above. BoeJiglin has done nothing for this thread...Has he provided us with any evidence, with any ammunition for the argument? Nope. He has merely underlined that which has already been said. [BoeJiglin - If EVERYONE responded with Jaco Pastorius, would it be an interesting thread to read? NO... It might be correct, b/c Jaco was ACE with that AXE, but it wouldn't be interesting to read. Therefore, other people might contribute other things to the thread. What have you contributed? Disdain. How scintillating and informative.]

Jack DeJohnette anyone? [Old fusion Bass player, but HOT!? I have been told that he is a drummer...my bad] I had the ERA and GENRE right... still sucks to be WRONG...

    Dave Schools?

    Edgar Meyer?

    Stanley Clarke?

    Others?

Jack DeJohnette is a drummer, and a damned good one, for that matter. He's played with Miles Davis, Bill Evans and other Jazz greats.

I have to agree with BoeJiglin. If the thread is "best bass guitar player" why are people listing favorites? No, reading Jaco over and over would not be fun for some of you, but to those who know who he was would love the mad respect.

Tiki god7, said it in a great order: Jaco, Victor, and Les. He left if as a toss up, but I would set that order.

For some new names missed(or I just missed them): Larry Graham(Sly & The Family Stone), Geddy Lee(Rush), Oteil Burbridge(Allman Brothers Band, The Peacemakers, The Aquarium Rescue Unit), Justin Chancellor(Tool), Tim Commerford(Rage Against The Machine), and Charles Mingus.

This last one is for JuneSwoon. My personal favorite is Todd Smallie(Derek Trucks Band)
