worst- Counting Crows did a cover of Friend of the Devil, that sucked especially because I kind of like Counting Crows.
Best-hmm...I think Jimi Hendrix did a cover of sgt. pepper's lonely hearts club band, I like that one, I can't think of any other really good covers.

    Best:
    RHCP - Fire (Hendrix cover)
RHCP - Havana Affair (Ramones cover - Although I think the hardcore punk fans propably hated it)
Dream Theater - Perfect Strangers (Deep Purple cover)
Yngwie Malmsteen - Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (ABBA cover)
Gary Moore - Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood (Animals cover)
Paul Gilbert - 2 Become 1 (Spice Girls cover- great one)

    Worst:
worst by far: Comfortably Numb (original by Pink Floyd ofcourse) - a dance-techno-beat (I'm not good at dance music) cover

If you like Radiohead, a really good cover is Radiodread. It was done by the same people who did Dub Side of the Moon, but instead they covered OK Computer. Climbing Up the Walls gives me goosebumps.

Worst-Was the Cars song done by the Smashing Pumpkins. I wish Chuck Norris would smash the pumpkins, I hate that group.

a rather lackluster cover i recently found was Elliott Smith's rendition of The Beatles' "Revolution." there's really nothing interesting about "his" version

but my favourite cover of right now is Elliott Smith's "These Days" (originally done by Nico). he kicks nico's ass with that song, yo :H

Best - 'All Along The Watchtower' - The Jimi Hendrix Experience (Bob Dylan)
Worst - 'All Along The Watchtower' - U2 (so pathetic it's not even funny)

Also, any of Stevie Ray Vaughan's covers are great, and Hendrix's 'Come On (Let The Good Times Roll)' is brilliant (SRV also does it.) That was done originally by Earl King.

Santana's 'Black Magic Woman' is brilliant. They mixed it with another song, 'Gypsy Queen'. Amazing. All of Santana's covers are great. 'Midnight Blues' by Gary Moore is beautiful. There will be others, too...

a good one i recently found:
Nouvelle Vague - The Killing Moon
    gotta love:
Ciccone Youth - Addicted To Love
one that doesn't live up to the original (pretty much impossible) but is pretty good:
30 Seconds To Mars - Hunter
and one that i am really surprised nobody has mentioned yet:
    A Perfect Circle - Imagine

Oh man...the song above...I'm too scared to even look at that!

But there are some great covers out there - Johnny Cash does awesome stuff with 'Hurt' and 'Personal Jesus' and so on...

I also really like Cat Power's cover of Wonderwall by Oasis. It's so much better than the original.

And I also Lily Allen's kind of reggae/ska cover of 'Oh My God" by the Kaiser Chiefs and The Kooks' cover of Gnarls Barkley's 'Crazy' (not a huge fan of the Kooks or of the original Crazy but their cover is awesome)

And finally I love Iron and Wine's version of Such Great Heights by The Postal Service - it's so great as the original but the cover is also really cool, in a different way.

    Some of the best:

Warning - Black Sabbath (original by the Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation)
Sunshine superman - 500 ft. of Pipe (original by Donovan, check this version out, it rocks!)
The prince - Metallica (original by Diamond Head)
Solitude - Cathedral (original by Black Sabbath)
Scarborough fair - Brainbox (folk song, Simon & Garfunkel)
Black Jack Davey - White Stripes (folk song, by Steeley Span among many others)
Hotel California - Gypsy Kings (original by the Eagles)

I'm not really interested in bad cover songs, so I usually forget the artists. But one of the worst is Cure's cover of Purple haze for sure.

'Crossroads' by Cream is one of the worst. I much prefer Robert Johnson's original version.

Best in my opinion hands down would have to be Xavier Rudd's cover of Marley's No Women No Cry....but then again I'm partial....a close 2nd to his cover of The Wind Cries Mary

Worst would have to Be Madonna's version of American Pie
