No mention of Edward G Robinson. He could make something out of lousy dialogue. Watch him in Double Indemnity.

What about Ian Holm in Alien ?

He sent me a autographed picture when I was in middle school. We had to write to a famous person we admired and I picked him. I've seen a few other autographs of his in stores and it looks the same as mine. I think it's real and I still have it.

When I was a kid he talked out his butt so he was cool. Now he makes anti-Trump political cartoons and talks like Alan Watts. He has grown up with me.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one my top movies ever.

Watched ‘The Fugitive’ last night and oh my...Tommy Lee Jones!
So serious, yet witty, yet human. A great role!

Robin Williams was the greatest actor. He was just in a lot of really cheezy and dumb movies, which is a real rotten shame. But when he was casted in a movie that was well written, directed, and put together, he nailed it. His role in Mrs. Doubtfire was amazing (it's the best one that comes to mind at the moment).

He’s certainly one of the greats and deserves to be heavily discussed for GOAT. Not personally a fan of ‘Mrs Doubtfire’ (recognize him for his work in it tho), but I did love him in ‘The Fisher King’, ‘House of D’, ‘Jack’, ‘The Birdcage’, ‘Toys’, ‘Good Morning Vietnam’, ‘Insomnia’, ‘World’s Greatest Dad’, ‘What Dreams May Come’ and particularly ‘One Hour Photo’ (which has to be a GOAT character for him). That’s a fn list... And it doesn’t even begin to cover his vast body of work. Sure he was in a few overproduced clunkers (‘Bicentennial Man’, ‘Flubber’, ‘Old Dogs’, ‘Patch Adams’), but I certainly don’t think they even begin to define him in the least. And I feel like he was so good that some of the other “cheesy films” he starred or appeared in actually worked because he elevated the project so much.

One of my favorite characters in a movie ever. And I don’t even like superhero movies.

what about the possibility - even likelihood - that the best actor ever lived before the age of film. actors have been around since the ancient Greeks and Romans. it's almost as if the "best actor ever" had to live in the 20th century and be recorded on film or else they never existed. maybe John Wilkes Booth was the greatest actor who ever lived. what about Joseph Jefferson (1829-1905) or Constantine Stanislavsky, original creator of "method acting". David Garrick (1717-1779) was considered the first great Shakespeareian actor and the best English stage actor of his era.

It goes without saying that one would have to see and/or hear an actor to rate their acting, so that would eliminate pre-cinema actors.

That being said, I understand the point you're making. In Ancient Greece, Socrates was portrayed in plays. I don't know the particular timeline of the plays but I think it was while he was still alive. So there is a potential scenario in history where an actor acted so convincingly that it contributed to getting the person they portrayed imprisoned and killed.
