alex i didn't know you bellydanced! that's so cool, do you perform or anything? and pharoah that's a gorgeous picture, my troupe is comprised all of middle aged women. i'm the baby, so i look a bit out of place but i like to think i bring a certain edge to some of the shows i'd love to have my own troupe someday and do really insane art deco performance kinda stuff with really weird concepts. kinda like the musee des femmes by desert sin, have your heard of them? check out their website, desertsin.com, it's awesome. i adore interpretive dance so i'd love to meld it with some middle eastern moves and create a whole play type show with creative movement. and lots of freaky visual effects and costumes *dreams*
Desert Sin is really fun to watch, I saw Sa' Elayssa and Djahari perform at Rakkasah last year. Plus they are on the Experimental bellydance tape. An interesting watch, if you ever get around to seeing it heres the website http://www.eemed.com/
I belly dance! I'm glad to see so many of you out there that are into it! I have been dancing for about two years now. I do some performing and I've done some teaching also. I love to perform to songs that aren't typically belly dancing songs. I performed a month ago to the song Voodoo Lady by Ween. I've had my zils for a while and haven't tried using them much, but I finally decided to break them in and they seem to go along nicely with Fleetwood Mac's Tusk. I still haven't gotten to the point where I can dance and play my zils at the same time though. hehe. Do you guys with costumes buy them or make costumes out of whatever you happen to have?
I do a little of both, I can sew but Metal stuff doesnt work for my hands, I LOVE Suzies belts and goods, I am getting a belt for xmas to match my bra cover. http://www.angelfire.com/al4/coinbeltsbysusie/ good stuff.
i checked out the photo gallery on eemed and i must say it's very inspiring! i hope i can weasel my way into some kind of troupe like that, it looks insanely fun. i usually make my costumes or borrow them from the ladies i dance with, fortunately one of my instructors is very similar in size to me. i've made one costume so far. i attached a picture of it, though you can't see the detail too well. took a while, i had to sew each sequin on by hand, it was quite a feat. but it's a lot cheaper than buying an entire costume. those are pics of us performing in the summer at folk fest. do any of you know of any good bellydance forums on the net? i've found a few, but they're all fairly inactive and i have trouble getting my fix from them.
right on, thanks for the suggestions. i added you to my friends list on livejournal, my name is night_tripper though i rarely post.
be sure and read in UNAMATA! an invite link for tribe is in my sig..go on ...check it out.... click it...you know you want to....
that should have been "for Tribe." i'm drumminmama there, too. are you in the umata photo album? have you chimed in on fuzzy pits?
Yay, a bellydancing thread! I took lessons a couple years ago, and now I work at Caravan Studio here in Portland, home of the American Tribal Style troupe Gypsy Caravan. I love Tribal the best; almost all the students are Pagan Hippie Chicks of one kind or another! It's a very earthy dance. Couldn't live without it!
i've wanted to get into belly dancing since the end of highschool..hmm like, 4 years now, but never really knew how to go about it. I think it's beautiful, and psyche, phew, she only inspires me more :&
Lucy, check Shira's site for a teacher listing in your area! It's not hard to get into at all, really. Bellydancing is for every woman, no matter what size, shape, age, race, etc. Even men are getting into it! Go for it!!
ah thanx! I didn't expect their to be any for Windsor, ON, but there's a couple. Are lessons usually expensive??
I belly dance. My uni has it as a lesson, not class like thing. Course I can't right now... stupid name.
