I got fired from my job last week. Never been fired before, not feeling too great about it.

(Long story short, I was hired to do accounts for a massive company over Christmas, but I'm shit at maths. it took them three and a half weeks to notice, which isn't too bad going I suppose)

Anyhoo, need cheering up, so what's the best/funniest reason you or someone you know has ever lost a job?

lots of big companies hire several times more people then they need as a kind of on the job testing,
then only keep as many as they actually needed, who they feel are best qualified, for more then a few months or even weeks.
seasonal means seasonal. i wouldn't worry about it. just don't mention places you were fired from on your resume.
being fired may actually be doing you a favor. in some places, its the only way you can collect unemployment while looking for your next job.

Getting fired is emotionally draining and devastating. I speak from experience. It wasn't because I was a shitty employee, I gave it my best and I still made critical mistakes.

Just remember that failure is an event, not a person.

I'm really sorry that happened to you. I got "laid off" back in 2012, when I had been working below a very very mean woman for a year. I tolerated her shit for a long, long time, and then when I finally stood up against her, my boss called me into the office and fired me (although he stated the reason on my ROE as shortage of work, so I could get employment insurance). I later found out that lots of people had problems with this woman, that it wasn't just me, but the boss had some kind of loyalty for her.

Try not to be so hard on yourself. It happens to the best of us.

all the firings i can think of were for the obvious reasons like skipping shifts, or stealing, or just not doing the job. not to be a dick, but probably the funniest one i have is someone who was hired to do accounts for a massive company over christmas even though they're shit at maths.

i do remember back when i was with the one pizza company, one store manager sent his boss an email calling him out on some unethical shit he was doing and was immediately fired. then another store manager publicly disagreed with that same boss over some marketing plans, and he was fired a couple weeks later for allegedly closing his store because he was too busy. not sure how true the official account on that one was.

and now that i think about it, at another pizza company someone was fired for losing the bank deposit, but the interesting thing is that it happened when it was just her and the (terrible) district manager in the store and there had already been a replacement for her hired prior to that day, so the general theory was that the district manager had stolen the deposit for an excuse to fire her (i certainly can't verify this rumor either way but i wouldn't put it past said district manager. she did give me a completely fraudulent write up one time just because she never liked me for reasons that i never did figure out).

and now i'm remembering yet another pizza company where there was a store manager who refused to do any work whatsoever, instead sitting on her ass and eating chicken wings while watching everyone else run around and try to keep up with business. for some strange reason, she couldn't meet her labor goals so eventually she started going into the timeclock and changing people's times to take hours away from them. obviously she didn't last.

that's all i can think of at the moment. maybe more will come to me later.

I never got fired... There were several "take this job and shove it" episodes though.

Same here, I’ve never been fired, but I have quit a few jobs shortly after being hired.

Let some other schlep develop 'carpal tunnel of the brain' doing a boring repetitive job

I got fired once but it turned out they had no grounds to fire me and I did end up getting unemployment.

I worked for an orthodontist group and they found out that their patients who had paid in full up front, or had totally paid but were still patients were not receiving Christmas cards. Only the people paying monthly were getting their cards. So they announced that we all had to come in on Saturday to hand address Christmas cards. I had family visiting from out of town that Saturday and so I told them I could not come in on my day off. I was told at the end of the day, after I punched out, that I was fired.

They told unemployment that I was constantly leaving (punching out) and going home. I guess they never expected a "mouse" like me to challenge them. I had to get a lawyer. When it came to the investigation they requested all my time cards and it was clear that I worked every day a full shift.

This was in the mid 1970's. I was already working another job when I finally got the determination and the check for weeks unemployed. I was working for a new orthodontist in town and apparently the "group" had ruffled his feathers because I think he employed me because the "group" had fired me. Also because I was good at my job.

It still cracks me up that I was fired for declining to come in on my day off to address Christmas Cards.

Sorry you lost your job. Hoping something better comes along.

Well, the old pizza place I used to work for, someone got fired because he called in a delivery from Pizza Hut. That was a pretty damn funny way to lose a job.

I've only been fired from one job. It was the nursing home kitchen job I posted about in the dish washing thread. I had the job for 2.5 yrs in high school. I really didn't want to work there but my dad told me I had to stay there until I found another job and that wasn't an easy thing to do (I think maybe because of my long hair at the time and I was too lazy to apply all over the place).

Anyway, I was easily the best person there at that specific job. I was better at my job than even my boss was. I had almost every detail of the serving preferences/requirements for 70-75 different residents memorized and got my things done like clockwork. Every time raises were given, I got the highest possible raise (50 cents an hour...nobody else ever got that much so I kept it to myself). That was my undoing. I think I started making too much money and the administrator wanted to hire someone at the entry level wage. So one time, another employee and I had traded shifts (totally ok to do). I worked her shift and then she didn't show up for mine. That supposedly came down on me and after my next shift, my immediate supervisor told me she was ordered to fire me. She was crying because she really liked me and didn't want to have to do that. I appreciated her giving me the raises and being cool to me but I was glad she fired me.

I was once fired because the boss told me he didn't like me. lol He beat around the bush a little while and I had to "encourage" (push) him to just tell me wth he wanted to say...it was that "there wasn't a place for me there"....I say WHAT? but I was beginning to catch on...anyway, he says Well, I just don't like you. :D

I got unemployment for a little while but so what...I was still fired. My state of SC is called an "at will" state, meaning an employer can fire you for ANY reason...at his/her will. You will still get unemployment IF you have enough money in your "unemployment account" and you meet the rule for how long you worked or some such. They make it as complicated as possible in this "at will" state, governed by the GOP.

I'm curious how in the world you even got a job working on accounts if you aren't good at math. WHY would you even want a job you should have known you'd have a problem with? lol

edit: I know I was fantastic at my job and the customers loved me, which that asshole SAID after he fired me. He wound up going to the next fast-food place I worked at over and over and over until I told one of his workers that since he didn't like me and he fired me I sure did wish he would QUIT COMING TO WHERE I WORK AND ACT LIKE HE'S MY BEST FRIEND! goodnightalive...Apparently he got the message because he quit coming his usual 2 or 3 times per week.

Cheers for all the messages of support, people :)

With regards the "how did I even get that job" question- in addition to my regular zero hour gig, I'm signed up with a load of temp agencies for temporary office and general work, usually they get me decent gigs, but sometimes I think they get commission for placing me somewhere whether I meet the job spec or not, and they'd rather try and fit a square peg into a round hole and hope for the best than lose the client.

I once got hired by a callcenter that had a rule that you couldn't take a day off if you got sick in the first 3 weeks. Made money for 2 weeks, most hours were spend learning the finer details of what was going to be my job, then got the flu (of which it is 99% certain I got it from a coworker). I didn't do it on purpose, I didn't really wanted to go but I had to take a day off. Which assured I didn't have to come back. Got payed good enough for those 2 weeks but I didn't actually worked the helpdesk for more than 5 hours :D Maybe more funny to me then anybody else.... :p
