Beer in green and clear bottles is often damaged by sunlight when you buy it, unless the bottles are enclosed in a case or something. But it sounds to me like you're talking about basic lager beers. Most of the green-bottled lagers (Heineken, Becks, Pilsner Urquell, etc.) are skunked, which is due to light damage. The same doesn't hold true when they're poured/drank from a can.

Brown-tinted bottles protect the beers from sunlight, so often the beer tastes fresher when in darker colored glass.

There aren't too many world-class beers sold in green bottles that I can think of, except maybe Franziskaner.

yeah i don't get breweries don't use exclusively brown glass bottles. i think the green bottle is the reason i don't like heineken - by the time it's made it to me, it's skunked. yuengling (another green bottled beer) doesn't have as far to travel before i enjoy it.

the sam adams cherry wheat turned me off from cherry flavored beers. tasted kinda like cough syrup. not the same beer, but they might taste kinda similar.

yeah, i'm feeling fine now, but the thought of drinking still kinda turns my stomach. i'm sure i'll drink again.

most times that i drink it's a beer or two. and if i'm drinking more, i usually know my limit. i guess i got a little carried away with my xmas beer and seeing family - i drank more than i should have.

but i don't think i really need a permanent aversion to it. i agree that blacking out is really not good, but i haven't done that since high school or something.

Yeah it's easy to get skunked ones, you gotta buy 'em from a store that stores the right and moves the shit, or like you say, buy it in a can.

And BTW, Pils Urquell IS a world class beer! Hmmf! :p

It was the norm. Also for Heineken (non-export at least). But I think design people in the advertising business found out green beer bottles are more attractive.

It's a pretty good Euro lager when it's not skunked. I would struggle to define it as a world-class beer, though, but I suppose that is a matter of personal opinion.

There's nothing wrong with drinking a little too much, as long as you don't make a regular habit out of it. I blacked out from drinking this holiday season myself, but I guess I am fortunate to never puke from drinking too much. I drank about a liter of vodka Christmas night and woke up still drunk after 9 hours the following morning, which was kind of cool since I was able to drink a shit ton of water and avoid any major hangover.

I used to drink like a sailor when I was a teenage rockstar (ha!) never, ever blacked out.
Not even when I drank on barbiturates. Damn seconals are fender-benders though lol

i drank ~60 ounces of pumpking (so less than 3 of the big bottles), a couple shots of goldschlager, and 2-4 jaegermeister mixed shot/drinks

so a lot, but not the most i've ever drank.

and it was by far the WORST hangover of my life. i'm still not 100% convinced that i didn't get a case of food poisoning.

i'm autoclaving (sterilizing) that growler before i ever use it again.

could have been the shrimp or scallops too, but no one else got sick that i know of.

I heard it was from lights in bar fridges not the sun. But either sounds plausible.
Canned beer is terrible IMO. Ugh. I just prefer to poor them into a froze a stein. Lots of beers I notice on the label they'll actually suggest "for a more comfortable taste, poor into glass" or something similar. I've noticed that more and more now.

yeah a lot of good beers suggest right on the bottle that you pour it into a glass to bring out the full flavor. i find that i prefer even clear bottles over cans - just seems to taste better. but i hardly ever see good beer sold in cans. i have seen some though.

a lot of people, at least in america, drink their beer too cold. some beers you want to serve at like 48 degrees F (9 C)
it's not like i measure the temperature of my beer though, just something i read

I've drank Guiness before and killkenny? I think they were meant to be room temp.
Wasn't the biggest fan, then again, even my water needs to have ice crystals forming before I drink it. =p
I just don't get warm drinks except for coffee.

There are a growing number of craft brews being sold in cans. In fact, the trend seems to be growing quite rapidly. Personally, I don't think cans adversely affect the beer's flavor, unless it's weak, watery stuff with little flavor to begin with. When it comes to most mass-produced lager beers, it makes little difference whether it's in a bottle or can since it tastes like shit anyway.

It shouldn't be really quite room temp, between 45-50 degrees F I think is best.

It's worth noting, some people are concerned about Biphenol A leaching out of the epoxy resin can coating.

I thought BPA is usually only found in canned food items. Most beverage cans don't have any liner. Or do they?

to far into this conversation to reply to everyone that i wanted. i will state that recently i had sam adams boston lager in a can and it tastes like a completely different beer than what i was used to in a bottle. not better or worse...(although im sure some will have opinions on that.) but no question it tasted different. most notably to me it was less hoppy.

as for the preference of green bottle to brown bottle. i wouldnt use bottle color as a barometer for a beer. in my experience only certain types of beer are made in a green bottle. and thats ok if you like them, we wont judge you to harshly here.
that being said i will retract my statement if anyone can name a stout or porter made in a green bottle.
