You probably recognize the name Bayer as the people from Germany who market and sell Bayer's aspirin, in a little yellow bottle. Did you know that in 1978, Bayer manufactured and sold a blood-clotting agent called Factor VIII? Now, that may not sound interesting on its own, but try this one on for size: Bayer's Factor VIII was contaminated with HIV, and was spreading the disease to users of their medication. What's more, three other pharmaceutical companies producing the same Blood-clotting agent knowingly and intentionally recruited and paid plasma donors who were used to produce FVIII, most of these donors having a high risk of HIV, namely prisoners, intravenous drug users, and homosexual plasma donors. By law, many of these people should have been excluded for having previously tested positive for hepatitis. The Federal gov caught wind of this, and made sure not to let Bayer sell their product any longer. Through a legal loophole, the cheeky bastards were able to ship all their product to developing countries over-seas, knowingly infecting people with HIV.
