We've been getting torn with gales and really really heavy rain since yesterday. (Central Scotland)

 

Yup this is the storm that was forecast !!! - like I said, batten the hatches and seal the doors !!!

Thank you Suzanne darlin' - that I am, sat in riser/recliner armchair dressed in a large woolen jumper, sat beside a large radiator, so I'm snug and warm. In addition, since about 07.00 this morning I've had a small turkey crown , slathered in butter cooking in my slow cooker and a few minutes ago I peeled and chopped some potatoes, parsnips, carrots and onions and they are now roasting in the oven. They should be ready round about 13.30 ish and then I will pig out on roast turkey Sunday lunch !!!

 

OMG it has started here!!!!!

 

Stuffed !!! the turkey was cooked to perfection (in a slow cooker so it doesn't dry out the meat), the veg were roasted golden brown and the gravy was heated using some of the goodness from the turkey too. I have enough turkey to last most of the week !!!

 

Batten down and ride it out Candy darlin'.

 

GAWD it went so dark!!!!

 

We have a very strange yellowish sky and rain coming down in buckets !!!

T'was a wild and windy night here - the wind whistled and whined in the chimneys above me in the early hours this morning (circa 02.30ish). When it gets light we'll see what damage has been done to the treese and garden fences.

 

Might be a duststorm.

can anything be battened other than a hatch? i've never heard it in any other context.

 

What does the idiom batten down the hatches mean?
batten down the hatches. to fasten the entrances to the lower part of a ship using wooden boards. to prepare for a difficult situation: When you're coming down with flu all you can do is batten down the hatches and wait for it to pass.

 

so could i just batten my front door if i don't want anyone getting in?

 

Or get a ship. lol
