Mountain children on steps of school in Breathitt County, Kentucky | Photo, Breathitt county, Appalachia
The circumstances we see in those photos are sad though. Those kids are not barefoot out of choice, they are barefoot out of poverty for the most part.
I grew up in Alabama during the 50s. We didn’t like wearing shoes. Never had more than one pair of shoes, two pair of pants, 2 shirts and 4 pair of underwear. Dad made $100 per week. We didn’t think we were poor. I’m happy I didn’t have to work a full time job like some of these kids, though. They look tired and hopeless. I never was taught about the history of child labor in our country.
