    Their hair shafts are hollow and translucent to allow sunlight to reach their skin, and their skin is black, to absorb as much heat as possible. In cold temperatures, their fur lays flat to hold heat, making them look white. When they get warm, their fur stands up to allow air circulation, which makes them look darker. I always thought it was fascinating how all that works.
