brilliant movie- watching it in 3D was hard though- it made me wanna yunt many times- but once you get past that- its all gravy- made me fall in love with love again hahaha~
Oh, I'm just an enthusiastic amateur and in no way a professional in the field - or, to put it shortly: just a movie nut. I've always been interested especially in SF and fantasy movies, and therefore Avatar was a definite must-see for me. On reviewing acting, I am somewhat influenced by the time I spent in the english-speaking drama group in college... I even had some stage time back in those times. Just today I received good news, since the release date of the first DVD version of Avatar is set: April 23 (and of course I placed a pre-order to have it delivered in time). Next thing to eagerly wait for will be the special edition. Speaking of interpretations, I could have done worse. Today avatar-forums.com pointed me to a truly twisted review published here: http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=2010\03\14\story_14-3-2010_pg3_4 Oh well, interpretations come in all fashions, I guess. Thanx for the link. I actually read that guy's stuff and methinks he analyses too much. Did he even see the movie. Like that guy in Matrix looking at all the ones and zeros passing by that represented the girl in the red dress, this guy didn't see the design mode that was the visual movie but the HTML code behind it. He really seemed to denigrate the concept of the Na'vi as ppl living in harmony with their world, much like the North American natives before the Europeans came and showed them how to be productive. Here is just one part of his analysis that gives away his perspective. 4) As opposed to the technocratic ‘Westerners’ who control their environment to excess, the Na’vi create very little. Congenitally passive, illiterate and un-adaptive, they are incapable of generating or inventing anything beyond random decorations. The Na’vi female heroine in the film, Neytiri (played by Zoe Saldana) shows no interest to learn about her lover’s world or culture, and years of violent clashes did not stop the Na’vi from using arrows against metal shields. What I got out of that same bunch of facts is that the Na'vi were quite capable of inventing useless things like developed cultures but chose not to because they had all they NEEDED. And why take an interest in your lover's culture that he was renouncing to join yours. And to stand and throw spears at an impenetrable enemy is considered the mark of a true warrior who will never surrender.
Good response Shale. I didn't even finish reading that entire article but all I have to say is i'm thankful I don't and don't have to analyze a movie like this to death in that fashion. Avatar to me was mainly about pushing the visuals of cinema to new heights. It's a bonus that it was more than that. Despite what some said, I found the story interesting and captivating, keeping me interested and entertained the whole way through. The acting was not flawless, but I don't expect it to be in this type of movie and in fact I like how certain characters kind of overact their particular role, in a fantasy movie like this it exaggerates but emphasizes the role of the character. I dunno, to me I feel intense historical, social, and analytical analysis is better suited for movies like Crash or Glory or something. I certainly don't watch Terminator 2 and ponder about our increasing reliance on technology or stuff like that. Especially considering the extremely mixed reviews about Alice in Wonderland i've heard, I think there was something very special about Avatar that was beyond just the visual aspect.
So I finally saw Avatar and it was absolutely worth the price of the DVD James Cameron left his calling card all over that movie including his use of stars he previously cast including Sigourney Weaver and Michelle Rodriquez who is smoking hot Michelle Rodriquez H
I finally watched it and i gotta say the CGI is amazing, its a good film but not the greatest ever like some people i've heard call it. ^_^
I thought Avatar was kind of stupid. It was like more intense Pocahontas. I mean, pretty, yeah. Graphics were great. But thought the whole concept was unoriginal and stupid.
Well, some of you might have noticed, that there are trailers out there, promoting a re-release of Avatar this month (Aug. 27 in the US) in 3D only... It seems that Fox is going Lord of the Rings with this, by showing a slightly longer version with nine minutes of additional footage in it, before then releasing a special edition DVD/blu-ray disc set. Anyway, what I have read on other forums and seen in the trailer is enough to make me go to the movies again to see the new stuff (inlcuding some drama towards the end of the movie... Tsu'tey didn't die from the fall from that shuttle ramp... oh no. Prepare to find out the sad truth). There's also a new - or rather, previously unseen - species introduced in a great hunt scene (the sturmbeest), plus - of course - the "plug and play" scene between Jake and Neytiri. On MTV.com, James Cameron is quoted to publish an even longer version after the re-release in theaters, which will contain 17 to 19 minutes of additional footage... So, Avatar is going all Lord of the Rings trilogy on us, it seems... the steps are as follows: * release movie in theaters * release DVD without any extras/bonus material * re-release movie in selected theaters (3D/IMAX) with 9 minutes of additional footage * release special edition DVD/blu-ray with 17-19 minutes of additional footage What'll be the next step? We have heard talks about 30+x minutes of extra footage... so, will those minutes be put into an extras/bonus section of that second edition DVD/blu-ray? What about the rumoured "fan-edition"? I doubt, somehow, that this 17-19 minutes extra version is going to be it. So, there might be another one, the "ultimate" edition on the back burner, too. Mr. Moneymaker, a.k.a. Ted Turner, big boss of News Corp. (which owns Fox) surely knows how to line his purse with Avatard bucks. I should calculate what I have spent so far on this movie... I am sure that it's more than what I spent on watching The Dark Crystal at the movies 23 times back in my youth (the Avatar of its era back in 1981...). Wiggling bare toes, ~*Ganesha*~
I knew going in that the Avatar DVD I bought on first release was empty - with the intention of giving it away when the real one came out. But it does piss me off that the movie pushers are taking advantage of us addicts. As much as I hate it and always see movies in theater to support the art so to speak, buying bootleg DVD's may be in my future. I have already bought all 7 seasons of Star Trek: DS9 and TNG at a small fraction of what Paramount charges in video stores by getting them direct from China. They look legit, but someone told me they are bootleg. IDK, they advertise right in the open and they got thru customs. Still Paramount is ripping off Trekkers - so it is their responsibility to remain competitive with alternative sources.
Haven't seen this film yet, but it sounds mawkish, overhyped and terrible. My boyfriend saw it and says it was laughable. I'll see though.
Well, it was hyped, no doubt about that. And the Special Edition re-release was meant to get more money into Ted Turner's big purse, no doubt about that either... however: the extra scenes were great to watch, and a happy ending was turned into something bittersweet watching the hero mercy-kill a dying tribesmate. Very emotional and intense, too... And even though I will be following Fox's marketing master-plan by doing so, I will purchase the Collector's Edition (rumoured to be released on November 16) with a total of 17 minutes of extra scenes, including Jake's unhappy life on Earth. I got it on Blu-ray, it looks amazing. I think it's becoming cliche to criticise the story, for me, the story was the best part.
Avatar on HBO starting tonight. Watching it now. (Yes, I'm a fan... story, visuals, a fan.) Holding off on buying the blu-ray until they release the extended version on disc.
This movie SUCKED. A) James Horner isn't a very good composer, the whole movie the songs kept reminding me of Titanic. B) Pocahontas. C) They look sooooo computer animated. D) oh, and it really annoyed me that they plug into things.
No complaints. I didn't like the character, but I have no complaints about the acting. I hated the main character and Worthington's acting though, maybe I shoulda listed that...
I know the movie was an encyclopedia of quotes from Pocahontas to the Country of the Blind, and the imagery was quasi-animated; but I still enjoyed the movie and some moments were even magical :2thumbsup: Hotwater
