Being at the cutting edge of visual research today makes Nvidia merely the first enormous company to invest in this kind of research for commercial applications. AR headsets can be much lighter, with the new Magic Leap being a great example. The problem with the Magic Leap is that its ridiculously expensive, but only because the technology is ridiculously new and underdeveloped. Within twenty years we should auto-focus glasses begin to replace ordinary glasses for everyday use, with VR headsets already providing millions of legally blind people the first chance to see the faces of their loved ones.
