According to government, sensory based occupational therapy is not proven to work. Her theripists that have 4+ year degrees get reimbursed at 6$ an hour. Pathetic. First of all at the time of her diagnoses, she was under 2. I had a great job, insurance, etc. First thing the developmental peditrician said to me, was in order to get her therapy I had to make her uninsured, so the government would pick up the cost therapy. Normal insurance will not pay beacuse none of it is really "proven". So I had to quit my job in order to get her on state insurance. You are told that your child is entitled to this and that, but you must become the biggest bitch you never were to get it. Thats America. She was evaluated by "early intervention". Here, thats the program that provides therapy for childern under 3. I had no issues with them. They came out to my house weekly for speech, OT and play therapy. When a child turns 3 they transition into the public school system and a intermediate unit takes over. They recomended she be placed in a supportive classroom from the start. I disagreed. My daughter has powerfull imitation skills. I wanted her with typical peers. SO they refused funding for a typical class rooom for over a year. I sent her anyways and paid myself. Got a lawyer. Got retroactive reimbursment and they have paid ever since. As they should. She is in a typical classroom with her peers. She does have a TSS (EA assistant by your lingo) that goes with her. So right now shes getting: At school: 45 min speech a week 45 min OT a week 1 hour a week a special needs teacher for social skills and classroom integration. Thats all provided by the district thru the intermediate unit. After school she has a total of 2 hrs speech, 2 hours OT and 1 hour play therapy. Thats spread out over 5 days. She also goes to gymnastics 2 days a week, I consider that OT basically, as alot of her sensory needs are jumping, spinnng, etc. Im homeschooling kindergarden while shes attending preschool. In the fall shell be going here: http://www.thegrahamacademy.com/rooms.htm for 1st grade
wow, you rule! lol you went and got a lawyer and got shit done, if half of the family members I'd worked with would have been like you life would have been so much easier for so many of our clients. If our social workers would have been more like you life would have been so much easier for our clients. (to be fair we did have one really amazing social worker who I really respect) I tried being like you and I got fired! lol go figure. Does the school board pay for the schooling? That place doesn't look cheap but looks really awesome. It reminds me a bit of the montessori school I worked at for a while... but again cooler.
According to the schools site, funding is covered, so long as your school district provides a recommendation that the child attends. Sounds loop~holy, but what isn't?
