Ummm... Locks work real spiffy for broken windows. Did you read the OP, or just the title?

That's freaky. About a month or so ago, my husband switched out our front door. We didn't realize it at the time, but our almost two year old knew how to lock/unlock it. Well, she unlocked it one night, and I didn't check the front door, because it's always locked and almost never used. That night, some dude wandered into our front porch. My husband has a bunch of guns and sleeps with one close by. The guy is lucky to be alive. He had meant to go to our neighbors house.

I read both the OP and the OP's title. I'll even quote it.

Many windows are secured only by a latch. It is relatively easy for a thief to break one of the panes, open the latch, and gain entry.

If each sash has multiple panes and a grille (common), you can break every pane of glass in the window and still not gain entry if the window is locked. The thief then has to try to bash through the grille or pick the lock. If the grille is sturdy, it may be difficult or impossible for the the thief to break through.

Even if each sash has only a single pane of glass (for double and single hung windows) it is at least somewhat more difficult for the thief to gain entry if the window is locked.

A lock does not guarantee that an intruder can't get through a window, but it makes it more difficult for them to enter. This is why locks are used on windows.

The OP may in fact have had locks on her windows, which may be why it was only an attempted break-in :2thumbsup:

Cameras are great and you can get the stickers for the windows and doors indicating that you do have a surveillance system.

Sorry, I meant they broke the screen.

The window was locked, so they moved on to the next house. I'm glad we have a/c so I can keep the windows locked.

We did call the police to report it.

True but porkstock has a point about an unloaded gun... It could turn out badly.

This did trigger (pun intended) a home security idea though.... Using a surround sound system with 4 or 5 shotguns being cranked slowly, one after another all around the guy while the cops are called. You could even have a Dirty Harry type voice saying "lay down on the floor and stop shitting your pants asshole."

even just the fake stickers is a deterrent these days....so many people have cameras its not worth the chance so they move on when they see the sticker

yea, cameras are a deterrent even if they dont work, however theyre pretty much useless for catching someone after the fact unless you recognize the person as someone you know

put bars on any windows that are accessible

maybe get an alarm system because the type of locks most people use on their front door are easy to pick. even just a sign up that says you have an alarm system and cameras would work even if you dont actually have those things. most burglars wouldn't be willing to risk that. they'd look for the easiest place

someone broke into our storage unit over the winter. trashed the place but didn't take anything that was significant enough for me or the roommate to notice.

we did tell the storage people that our lawnmower was stolen, believing that it had been. a few weeks later my roomy happened to go into the garage and realized that the mower had been sitting in there all along.

I have a great big dog with a scary bark. She's a black Russian terrier and they were bread back in the USSR days to be a reliable guard dog for the military and then the russian police used them.
They were meant to be a fighting machine and she sounds like one, is very protective even against my friends believe it or not. Sister in law has tried to get close to her and she doesn't do anything but bark and show her teeth. As bad as that sounds my BF finally broke the ice with her and they can be in the same room now but it took a long time. She still gets mad at him if he was to wind up and slap my ass in front of her so we are careful not to play around where she can see and think something violent is happening to me.
Terriers are like that but she is a massive size compared to most. Can eat off the table without lifting one paw off the floor.
I have her plus 4 cameras around the house and signs on all doors and a few windows around the house.
I don't worry or feel I need a gun altho I do have a pump action pellet gun and it does make a fair noise going off, and pellets do hurt so I would fire it if I had to. I grew up with guns in the home and using them but I don't care to have one with my dog. I would just let her do the talking at what ever door or window someone would be at. I also have baby sound monitors because this is a big house so I can hear what's going on from where ever I am and it's by my bed at night. Those things bring in the other side of the house right to my bedroom and I would hear anything. Gotta watch that you buy the right ones tho because some have sound fader so you don't hear a baby unless he is chocking and all other background noise is unheard. It's not a good idea IMO but I guess it means a parent can sleep better when using it for a baby's room. I like to hear everything going on and it doesn't bother me when the fridge in the kitchen kicks in or it hears a car roaring down the road at night. I hear things that are unusual only and I sleep well with it on.
One night a woman and man were walking through my yard and I sat at my sunroom window in the dark watching them, only feet away from them, called the cops and they were spotted in a few yards that night.
This is a trick I heard helps for those who can't or won't have a dog. A big pair of old work boots outside the door and a heavy chain with a big dog dish near by the door. I also have dog signs at both driveways on the fences. Not saying beware, just Dogs live here.
Another good trick I learned many years ago is plug a small clock radio outside where your cars are or your dog can't hear what's going on and leave it on at night, once a person enters your yard and hears it he has to wonder if someone is up and maybe in the yard even. I leave one on 24/7 in my back yard where the sheds are and all the tools and stuff are stored. Always plugged my motorhome in and left a clock radio on in there too.
