Why does the sun lighten our hair but darkens our skin?

 

Because the hair is dead, skin is alive, and the sun destroys melanin.
The hair becomes lighter. The skin however reacts to melanin destruction (because it's alive) by increasing it's production ->more melanin->darker skin.
